Anyone know a clinic or med services for evacuees in Dallas area?
I helped a couple get from Reunion arena to an apt setup in North Dallas (Tollway at Bush Tollway).

I got a call earlier from them that they want to get him to a doctor, as "cuts on his leg are not healing". I've been tapped out timewise, helping them and others, and honestly, I didn't take it as an extremely high priority item.

I just read a post about 4 people from Nola dying from an "airborn disease"... and now I'm worried. This man walked (and "looted" a boat, rescueing others) thru the waters for five or six days, leaving his home and going back and forth between the Superdome and Convention Center with his wife and her sisters baby.

Walking thru the water and hanging out at the Superdome and Convention Center with open cuts on your leg, can't be good. When he got on the bus, they did give him (and everyone, I think) antibiotics.

Any ideas for him?

Also, anyone know how NOLA evacuees can apply for LA unemployment?

1. I might can guide you
Parkland Hospital for the medical treatment.
They can also go to any Texas Dept Human Services and get food stamps and medical assistance for 2 months.
Also...they can call Texas Workforce Commission and they will hook them regarding unemployment.
Good luck.

AT-- I read at the actual Department Website that the e-mail HWNN is referring to about the free food stamps is a scam.

They can still go get set up with food stamps, but will need to go through the same channels as other folks. I'll try to find the link.

Here we go:

Bogus food stamps/gasoline e-mail

An e-mail is being circulated that indicates that food stamps and free gasoline for Hurricane Katrina evacuees are available from or through the "Texas Department of Health and Human Services."

The e-mail is bogus.

However, hurricane evacuees wanting accurate information about food
stamps availability may call the 2-1-1 information service or 1-888-312-4567.

Some versions of the e-mail include the Web address for the former
Texas Department of Health, now part of the Texas Department of State Health Services.

The food stamps program is administered by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission.

Neither agency is supplying free gasoline.

2. there should be any number of walk-in "immediate care" centers
Less than a hospital emergency room. I went to one once when I had a bad migraine and fever. You will see a doctor. They can prescribe medicine and run tests. I assume they refer you if warranted.

Also, might as well invest in a few tubes of Neosporin.

6. Yes, but no telling what they might be charged.

Parkland is our county hospital, where they can be seen and treated, regardless of costs or insurance requirements.

My friend from the Dean campaign had an emergency appendectomy there about a year or so ago, and received excellent treatment even though he was unemployed and had no money. I believe it's a pay what you can sort of operation, but don't know what the exact arrangements are.

3. The number is at the end of the story
Funds are intended to help some 37,500 Louisianans by giving them jobs that include cleaning damaged areas and delivering humanitarian assistance, and providing job training. The money will be given to the Texas Workforce Commission to hire the temporary workers.

Grant money also will fund payments to people who don't qualify for disaster unemployment assistance or unemployment insurance, or those who have used up those benefits.

"We are working closely with the state to reach out to evacuees so they can access benefits and jobs as soon as possible," said Assistant Secretary of Labor for Employment and Training Emily Stover DeRocco. "Teams have already been deployed to evacuee centers."

Dislocated workers seeking help with assistance payments can contact 1-866-4-USA-DOL to speak with Labor Department personnel.
