Still trying to recover from Rita
Just getting to check-in & catch up on the news for the last month -- all I'm finding are Katrina stories. Does the rest of the country even care or know how many are homeless from Rita? Our home was deemed uninhabitable, so now what... FEMA said we needed to get out & then denied any emergency housing help saying our insurance company should cover it. Our insurance company said they *might* reimburse expenses, but 3 problems with that: 1) Can't get an insurance adjuster out here because they are so busy & a long waiting list. 2) No money to pay upfront in hopes of *possibly* getting reimbursed by them. 3) No places left to rent anyway. We are freaking out & just in limbo at this point. Is anyone else here in the same boat? We're in Jefferson County.

1. My family survived Rita well
One family in Port Acres and 7 in Bridge City. No major damage to their houses. Windows blown out, trees down, but no trees down on houses.

My aunt's biggest complaints are that there's no help with cutting the trees up to move them to the street (my uncle is back to work at a refinery) and that she's having to wait forever to get into Wal-Mart (only letting 30 people in at a time).

The whole family was up here for almost 3 weeks, most of it in a hotel, which FEMA reimbursed (well the hotel never charged them, they billed FEMA).

And I also agree, there's no coverage of Rita. I swear to god, the day after Rita came on shore, the news only talked about Galveston, Houston, Beaumont, Lake Charles and New Orleans. One time I heard a guy say "Well, there's Beaumont, Port Arthur and then the next city is really Lake Charles," my family was like "huh?" Or the one guy that said "We drove through Nederland, Bridge City, Orange today, lots of damage, but here we are in Lake Charles," but no pics of any of the damage.

I'm sorry, I hope that things start going your way.

2. I'm very sorry to hear about your troubles, Justyce.
Stories like this make me doubly crazed when I hear daily of what a bang-up job FEMA did in the wake of Rita. I hope your insurance company provides soon.

3. I am so sorry to hear about that, Justyce
This is really sad. It just goes to show you that our insurance companies, FEMA etc. can't handle multiple catastrophies. It's times like these when the "US is the world superpower" doesn't mean a thing!

4. Have you contacted the Red Cross?
They're providing hotel vouchers for at least a couple months, and also money (well, debit card kind of things) for Rita people. It won't be much, but it will be something, enough maybe to get you to safe shelter with family or friends elsewhere in the country.

Who deemed your house uninhabitable?

I'm so sorry FEMA sucks so bad.
