The Klan is coming to Austin
Edited on Mon Oct-24-05 03:52 PM by VelmaD
Seriously. I just got this link from the codepink mailing list:

http://www.kvue.com/news/local/stories/102405kvueKlan-eh.125c4c01c.html

They want to come and speak out in favor of that rancid anti-gay marriage ammendment ('cause Austin is just SO the place to do that :eyes: ) We have SO got to come up with a fun way to counter-protest.

2. speaking of TERRORISM
Terrorism is alive and kicking in this country. We cannot say we are against it when they are still allowed to congregate.

And their point would be? WHAT? Are they out of their freaking minds? AUSTIN?

They've contacted APD about "security". Well I'm pretty damned sure they will need some.

Message to kkk: Do not come to Austin. No one here needs anything you're peddling.

Sheesh.

edit: More .. "pro family values"? HUH? SINCE WHEN does pro family values involve white sheets and hoods? FER GAWD'S SAKE.
This just pisses me off. I hate those bastards.

5. Actually I think it would be good for us
Think about it. Having the klan defend the hate amendment. It would drive more people to the polls to vote against Prop 2. I do think most people don't want to be on the same side of anything the klan supports.

It does remind me about a story Molly Ivins likes to tell about a rally the klan held here at the capitol about a decade ago. She said it put free speech liberals in quite a dilemma. Liberals had to support free speech, even for the loonies like the klan. Well this being Austin where the people are creative and peaceful, yet like to speak their minds, a great plan was hatched. When the klan showed up at the capitol they were met by a long line of people who turned their backs to them and promptly mooned them.

I seem to remember something about that rally and it sure would be funny to find photos of that mooning.

6. Why can't we do it again?
I know it's relatively short notice, but couldn't we muster a decent turnout to moon the Klan again?

7. Moon The Klan - Part II
Good ideas never have to be retired.

I found a good little write up by Turk Pipkin. This is an old story. It's been a long time since Terry Keel was sheriff. Somewhere in between 1992-1997. Looks like songwriter Steven Fromholz came up with the idea.

http://www.turkpipkin.com/mag/fun/klan.htm
Moon The Klan
The action fleshed out as the mooners sang a spirited rendition of If You're Happy and You Know It (Moon the Klan). Unable to reach the front row of anti-racist protestors, we were happy to bring up the rear, so to speak. A survey of bottoms quickly revealed that exposing the flesh was truly not the point as many mooners were wearing comedy underwear; one pair covered with mooing cows and one hand-lettered version reading "Support Live Music In Austin." My own boxers, covered in yellow smiley faces, perfectly expressed my opinion that there is no point in yelling at or even arguing with the Klan. It only legitimizes them and let's them into our lives. Why bare our teeth when we can bare our buns? That was the philosophy that revealed vertical smiles from both men and women mooners, proving that modesty is not always the better part of valor.

:rofl::rofl::rofl:

4. I'm in for the counter protest!
The KKK will hopefully help people realize just how anti-family this amendment really is. Surely we don't need their help, but this may be the affect. Will this help us state our case - it is so absurd that the Klan is supporting it?

11. Peaceful response to the KKK rally
Fair-minded Texans to gather for a nonviolent response to the hate
language of the Ku Klux Klan & the discriminatory language of the Texas Marriage Amendment

The Ku Klux Klan is bringing their message of hate to Austin. They are
telling Texas that they are rallying against "legal Fag Marriages."
The KKK is in favor of Constitutional Amendment #2 and is demanding
that Texans rally for "Christian Marriage."

Come join thousands of Texans in a peaceful vigil

Saturday, November 5, at 1:00 pm in Austin

at Auditorium Shores located at South 1st Street and Riverside Drive.

VIGIL ON THE FIRST STREET BRIDGE

1:30 to 3:00

(We have Austin Police Department and City of Austin clearance to use
S. 1st Street Bridge)

This will define who WE are as Texans

and

come together to show a diverse coalition of fair-minded Texans in
opposition to the hate message of the Klan AND against Prop. #2.

We will speak for ourselves and not engage the Klan because our
peaceful, non-violent demonstration is not about hate. It is about
love and respect – which is what marriage is really all about. Our
rally will be a powerful witness to truth and justice. During the
final 72 hours before Texans vote against Constitutional Amendment #2,
we will show America that Texans are fair-minded.

The Texas Constitution is a sacred document that always has bestowed
rights and protections upon citizens of this state. Constitutions were
never meant to be used for discriminatory practices. If the amendment
passes, it will do just that.

The Klan will be at City Hall. We will meet at Auditorium Shores, and
as we sing songs of hope and love, we will extend peace like a river.
We will walk halfway across the S. 1st St. Bridge, where our peaceful
message will speak volumes.

SO,

Stand with us in peaceful solidarity
Against Hate
Against Violence
Against Constitutional Amendment #2

In the words of George W. Bush, "You’re either with us or you’re
against us."

The No Nonsense In November Campaign (www.nononsenseinnovember.com), in
conjunction with Soulforce Austin (www.soulforce.org), is working to
galvanize a city-wide nonviolent response to the hate speech of the Ku
Klux Klan and the discriminatory language in Proposition 2, which the
Klan supports.

12. Texas AG candidate speaks out on the Klan and the Hate Amendment
On November 5, the hooded bigots of the Ku Klux Klan will descend on Austin to march in support of the passage of Proposition 2. These masked shock troops of hate do Texans a favor in exposing the real meaning and significance of the proposed amendment in all its shining glory. There could be no greater barometer of what is really at stake in the vote on Proposition 2. The Klan does not show up anywhere unless it is to support bigotry and hate. Never before has the Klan shown up to support passage of a proposed amendment to the Bill of Rights of the Texas Constitution, because never before has there been such an organized attempt to enshrine the Klan’s brand of hate in the noble charter of liberty and democracy of the people of Texas.

The Bill of Rights of our Texas Constitution of 1876 is one of the greatest charters of individual human rights on the face of the earth. Every Texan who loves our state should be personally offended at this disgusting effort to use it as a forum for the propagation of hate. I know that I am.

Every Texan should also be appalled that the lawyer who has the greatest responsibility to defend the Constitutional rights of the people of Texas, the state Attorney General, instead allies himself with the prophets of hate, as Attorney General Greg Abbott does in his public letter of October 27, 2005, in support of Proposition 2. I know that I am, and I know that Texans are entitled to a lawyer for the people who understands that every Texas citizen should have equal legal respect as a 100% equal part owner of our Constitutional democracy.

The world will be watching Texas in the vote on Proposition 2. Fellow Texans, let’s show the world what we’re made of. Take a stand against hate. Take a stand against the Ku Klux Klan. Take a stand against politicians who ally themselves with the Klan. Take a stand for liberty and democracy. Show the power of Texans’ support of our Constitution. Show the power of your vote. Vote down Proposition 2.

Democratic Candidate
For Texas Supreme Court 2006

13. Hi David!
Nice to see you post!

I too am offended that this disgusting effort to instill hate and divide us, is just a ploy to distract from our real problems in Texas. They have no solutions to our problems so they go around screaming that the sky is falling.
