That would be
Thomas Campbell:
A Washington insider and Republican Party loyalist, Tom Campbell comes armed with a sparkling résumé and a BlackBerry brimming with high-level political contacts. He's a former Bush I appointee; his inner circle includes a former Republican National Committee chairman handpicked by Ronald Reagan; he already has the covert support of some big-money-raising D.C. lobbyists; and he's been quietly courting endorsements from Republican congressmen and senators who are fed up with DeLay's fiercely partisan, slash-and-burn approach to politics.
As much as I hate to say it, if DeLay gets busted and this guy winds up as the nominee, CD-22 stays Republican. :puke:
There
could be a runoff in this race, leaving the winner undetermined until the first of April. Most insiders don't give that good odds at the moment. The good news: conventional political wisdom in Texas has been officially flipped on its ass, with Carole's indy filing yesterday.
(Keep your fingers crossed that DeLay's trial on money-laundering charges lasts until, oh, mid-October 2006 or so. The longer his stench lingers in the air, the better things will turn out for Democrats -- coast to coast.)
