D/FW DUers: Katy Hubener needs your support for her State Rep run
Edited on Sun Jan-29-06 03:41 PM by derby378
Once again, Democrat Katy Hubener is running for State Representative for Texas District 106 (which emcompasses Grand Prairie and a small part of south Irving). Here's her campaign website:

http://katyfortexas.com/

Republican Ray Allen, first elected to the Legislature in 1992, recently resigned with less than a year left in his term. Allen claimed he moved, but a few scandals were starting to catch up with him and he knew he wouldn't win re-election.

In 2004, Hubener came very close to defeating Allen, even taking his home district, and causing a lot of Republicans to cross party lines to vote for her. This time, however, the Republicans are running Kirk England. England is the son of the current mayor of Grand Prairie. His campaign has already started push polling citizens and spreading lies about Hubener.

Governor Rick Perry has called a special election for this race, set for February 28 (this is before the primary). This was intentional, so that the Republican could have a better chance of winning.

England was recently approached by school voucher advocates. Last time the Legislature voted on school vouchers, they lost it by one vote - not enough moderate Republicans were on board. England was told if he would promise to vote for school vouchers, and be that one last vote they need, they would pour millions into his campaign and practically guarantee a victory.

He promised.

School vouchers will soon be coming to Texas, which means hundreds of millions of dollars will be diverted away from already severely underfunded public schools. Their insane quest to destroy public education, the foundation of any democratic society, is nearly complete. This will have repurcussions for other states and possibly the nation. This one tiny special election race in Texas for State Representative.

I have met Katy Hubener a few times in the past, and she reaches me as a confident and capable woman who is sorely needed in our State Legislature. Katy stands with Cindy Sheehan, and she has also been a passionate advocate for positive and constructive change within the Dallas County Democratic Party.

I heartily encourage District 106 Democrats to vote for Kate Hubener!

1. Katie has my support!
I sent her a little bit of money too, and I encourage all who can to help her out as well. She's a great candidate and we have a really good chance of winning this special election too.

It's down to a two person race. I read on Burnt Orange Report the Kirk England is the only opponent she will face in the special election. And a big hell yes to the Texas Young Democrats who are contributing $2,500 to Special Election Races. Both to Katy and Donna Howard. Great going!!!

One of the two candidates (Edward Smith) to run in HD 106 in Dallas where Ray Allen has retired has now been kicked off the ballot since none of the addresses he gave were in the district, and he has only lived there 6 months. That leaves Kirk England to take on Katy Hubener in the special election and general election.

3. A little snippet from Kirk England's website
This should set off some alarm bells:

One size simply does not fit all. As we re-design our school finance system, we must remember that local parents, local teachers and local schools need more control over curriculum and spending.

Local parents controlling the curriculum? And who will control the local parents? Some young-earth creationist fundy wacko?

Don't get me wrong. I'm all for parents getting involved in their kids' education - but not to where some dad who flunked high school algebra tries to dictate how teachers at his daughter's high school teach calculus.

5. One down and one to go
This month we have two opportunities to make Texas bluer - one we took in Austin with Debbie Howard in House 48. The second can go to (a very well deserving) Katy Hubener in Grand Prairie with some more effort. I am planning to get a couple more days in getting votes for her as this is a win that we (in the metroplex area) can share in. Is it worth 2 hours or $20 to get one of our own elected?

The GOP machine is cranking up to place the soon-to-be-empty-nester Craddick-rubber-stamp Kirk England into this position. Katy owned him in the cable channel debate. Unfortunately, this didn't get much coverage, which is a shame as most voters need to see what kind of dim bulb the Republicans are supporting. You can complain about Republicans in power, or do something about it. I'm going to do something about it.
