Once again, Democrat Katy Hubener is running for State Representative for Texas District 106 (which emcompasses Grand Prairie and a small part of south Irving). Here's her campaign website:
http://katyfortexas.com/Republican Ray Allen, first elected to the Legislature in 1992, recently resigned with less than a year left in his term. Allen claimed he moved, but a few scandals were starting to catch up with him and he knew he wouldn't win re-election.
In 2004, Hubener came very close to defeating Allen, even taking his home district, and causing a lot of Republicans to cross party lines to vote for her. This time, however, the Republicans are running Kirk England. England is the son of the current mayor of Grand Prairie. His campaign has already started push polling citizens and spreading lies about Hubener.
Governor Rick Perry has called a special election for this race, set for February 28 (this is
before the primary). This was intentional, so that the Republican could have a better chance of winning.
England was recently approached by school voucher advocates. Last time the Legislature voted on school vouchers, they lost it by one vote - not enough moderate Republicans were on board. England was told if he would promise to vote for school vouchers, and be that one last vote they need, they would pour millions into his campaign and practically guarantee a victory.
He promised.
School vouchers will soon be coming to Texas, which means hundreds of millions of dollars will be diverted away from already severely underfunded public schools. Their insane quest to destroy public education, the foundation of any democratic society, is nearly complete. This will have repurcussions for other states and possibly the nation. This
one tiny special election race in Texas for State Representative.
I have met Katy Hubener a few times in the past, and she reaches me as a confident and capable woman who is sorely needed in our State Legislature. Katy stands with Cindy Sheehan, and she has also been a passionate advocate for positive and constructive change within the Dallas County Democratic Party.
I heartily encourage District 106 Democrats to vote for Kate Hubener!
