Gilmore and I are coming to Texas for St Patrick's Day.
Dallas, to be precise. Irving, to be more specific. We will be visiting Gilmore's cousin and will be in town the whole weekend.

So, riddle me this, Texas DUers:

Where can we go? What can we do? What should we see?

And, more importantly...

Any chance of getting together with you fine people on the Saturday or Sunday?

1. Seeing how you'll actually be in Far North Austin in that case
You might consider meeting us for one of the Austin Sunday DU Brunchs. I'll bet they would have a special one in your honor if you were to RSVP!

4. No way we could make that, unfortunately
that's a long drive. And we're flying in, so we'd be taking a rental car.

3. I'm not sure what I'm doing that weekend,
but we've had meetups before and I'm sure we can round one up! derby and ginbarn, TexasThoughtCriminal, yellowdawg, and several others usually manage to make meetups.

As far as what to do, what do you enjoy doing and eating? Let us know what you can like and we can make some recommendations. I think the St. Paddy's Day parade will be that weekend, and every Irish bar will be packed to the gills. There are several, some with live music. Some of Dallas' landmarks include the Nasher Sculpture center, the world's only outdoor installation dedicated to modern sculpture. There is, of course, the Sixth Floor Musuem dedicated to the Kennedy assassination, and you can go out to the grassy knoll if you care to do some amateur conspiracy theorizing. There's usually good live local music in Deep Ellum. Of course, everything I've been telling you about is in Dallas proper, which is a little drive. I'm not familiar with Irving per se -- I don't get out to the burbs much. I think DeposeTheBoyKing lives out in Irving, but she doesn't drop by the Texas forum too much, so you might want to PM her.

6. This website is great:
www.guidelive.com for local restaurant reviews and entertainment news. My personal favorite sushi place is Sushi Saki, which is North Dallas-ish. If you should happen to be going to Deep Ellum for an evening of live music, Deep Sushi is also good.

Let's see, I see on the calendar that the Red Elvises are playing the Sons of Hermann in Deep Ellum on March 17th. They're awfully fun-- they're a Russian surf-rock band. The Sons is a great little venue, too, if you go early enough you can get seats, and it's this cool old fraternal hall with a lot of history to it. The Strokes are playing the Nokia that day, which is a big almost arena venue, but they're popular. Ooo, the next day, Old Crow Medicine Show is playing the Granada. That should be a fun show -- and that's another nice venue, a converted old movie theater. So it sounds like you have plenty of good live music choices.

Take a look around GuideLive.com, they have a lot of good information, lots of restaurant reviews and so on. What do you usually like to do when you go to a new city? Sports, museums, shopping, walking tours, etc?

8. If you're into art the Kimbell Museum in Ft. Worth
is a good place to spend some time.

The Kimbell currently has Paul Gauguin exhibit. I went on Valentine's Day and I must admit I was mesmerized by how wonderful his paintings are, and how they have survived over hundred years. It was a treat to get as close to his paintings to experience all the different brush strokes he uses, and the detail of his paintings.

I think one of the best sushi restaurants in the D/FW areas is the Sushi Zone in Arlington. I've tried a lot of sushi restaurants in the D/FW area, and I still rate the Sushi Zone my fav.
Also there is one in Irving worth mentioning and that is Hanasho Japanese Restaurant 2938 North Belt Line Road, Irving, TX 75062. They have good food as well.
Yum, now I want sushi:cry:
Something to consider if you're wanting sushi make sure you go on Sat, as most sushi places are closed on Sun.

9. do try to go over to Las Colinas to see the Mustang Sculpture
Edited on Mon Feb-27-06 09:16 PM by yellowdogintexas
it is just a gorgeous piece of public art. You can see photos of it at the
Irving Convention & Vistors Bureau website

http://www.irvingtexas.com/

but there is no photograph in the world which can do it justice. It is free, just sitting out there in Williams Square. For something that will only take a little bit of time, it will be well worth the effort.

Then you can head over to Fort Worth, the laid back side of the MetroPlex! haha

http://www.fortworth.com/

And we do love our meetups! Sometimes we just meet in a restaurant in the MidCities area so neither the Dallas folks nor the Fort Worth folks have to drive too terribly far.

Crispini is right on about every Irish Bar in Dallas being packed, but there are lots of neat things to do all over this area..including dinosaur footprints in Glen Rose Texas. http://www.glenrosearea.com/ and a wildlife sanctuary too....

ON EDIT: you really need to choose food from the 4 main food groups: Barbecue, Tex Mex, Chicken Fried and Dairy Queen if you are coming to Texas.
There are some wonderful Asian places, various South American anc Caribbean places, Middle Eastern etc.
