DeLay trailed Lampson in funds in early 2006
Houston Chronicle

By SAMANTHA LEVINE

WASHINGTON — Rep. Tom DeLay, R-Sugar Land, trailed his Democratic opponent, former Rep. Nick Lampson, in fundraising and cash in the bank, according to new financial reports that covered the first six weeks of the year.

DeLay, who faces three contenders in the March 7 Republican primary for the 22nd Congressional District, said he raised $154,712 and spent $304,795 between Jan. 1 and Feb. 15, the time span covered in the pre-primary filings required of candidates. The lawmaker reported having about $1.3 million in the bank.

Lampson, who is running unopposed in the Democratic Primary, reported having raised $250,970 in the same time frame and having spent $125,027. He said he has more than $1.4 million in cash on hand.

According to his report, DeLay's largest expenditure — $110,000 — went towards paying Richard Cullen, the attorney representing DeLay in the investigation of an influence-peddling scandal involving indicted former lobbyist Jack Abramoff.

DeLay, who has held his congressional seat for 22 years, is not formally a subject of the probe and has not been charged.

DeLay relinquished his post as House majority leader last year after a Travis County grand jury indicted him on charges related to campaign fundraising for the 2002 legislative races. DeLay has said that the charges are politically motivated, that he is innocent and that he will win in court.

2. Nick's gotten some of my money
Not a lot mind you, I'm not wealthy, but this is the first time I've given to a congressional candidate outside of my district. I also sent an even smaller amount to David Harris. Wish I had lots more money to spread around.

Now why does DeLay get to spend $110,000 of the money he raised for his campaign, on legal fees for a criminal trial? That is obscene.

3. I'm in DeLay's district
so, I really appreciate that, sonias. We are going to need all the help we can get from democrats everywhere.

I'm hopeful that after all of these years that this is finally the year that we can get rid of him.

4. Muse when we rid Congress of DeLay, we all win
We are all in this together. I know Nick Lampson can beat him and I can't wait for election night to see the returns. Visualize kicking Tom DeLay's ass.
