Bennett endorses Miles in HD146 runoff
3/16/06

Houston, TX - In a statement released today by his campaign, former District 146 candidate Al Bennett has endorsed Borris L. Miles, and urged his voters and all the voters of District 146 to support Miles in the upcoming runoff election, Tuesday, April 11. Bennett, a local attorney, ran a strong third in the March 7th Democratic primary, earning 19% of the vote, while Miles ran second with 33%.

Citing the need for a new voice and new priorities, Al Bennett said, "Borris Miles is the only candidate who can provide needed change. While the Democratic voters of District 146 did not nominate me for the House of Representative, a majority said they wanted a change, and I echo that call."

In endorsing Borris Miles, Bennett continued, "Al Edwards had been a missing voice with misguided priorities…this is our opportunity to make a change."

Borris L. Miles, a successful small business owner, former law enforcement officer and longtime community activist will face incumbent District 146 State Representative Al Edwards in the April 11 runoff election following a very heated primary election.

"I am honored to earn the support of Al Bennett.", Miles said. "Al ran a strong race on the issues, and has a bright future in public service. I am pleased to have his endorsement."

Running on a campaign of change, Miles, a Sunnyside native and lifelong District 146 resident, is running to fully fund public education, restore and expand access to children's health insurance, combat flooding and crime, and expand economic opportunity. "For too long, the residents of District 146 have gone without a real voice in Austin", Miles said. "It's time they had the representation they deserve – someone who will fight for their interests at the Capitol. I will be that representative."

Borris Miles enjoys the endorsement and support of a variety of community leaders including Mrs. Audrey Lawson, Houston City Councilmembers Ada Edwards, Ronald Green and Peter Brown, Harris County Constable May Walker, HISD Trustees Larry Marshall, Dianne Johnson and Kevin Hoffman, Bishop Gene Moore, Ministers Manson Johnson, Terrence Johnson, Ed Lockett, Fort Bend Constable Ruben Davis, Houston Urban League CEO Sylvia Brooks, Candidate for Texas Governor Chris Bell, Former State Representative Debra Danburg, Ambassador Arthur Schechter, Mark Lee, Herman Litt, The Jewish Herald Voice, Former Houston Police Chief C.O. Bradford and many others.

Early voting for the runoff election begins April 3rd and continues through April 7th. Election Day is scheduled for Tuesday, April 11, 2006.

1. Excellent!
At last night's CEC meeting, there was polite applause for Edwards' representative and enthusiastic applause for Borris. I just wish I had a vote in this one.

2. You can always help the campaign, WHD

With just a few weeks until the election, there are many blocks to be walked and telephone calls to be made. Many of the people in my precinct don't even know that there is a runoff. John Coby if you're reading this, I'll round up a posse to walk in Nick Lampson's area if you can round up a posse to walk in Borris Miles' area. And WHD, you KNOW I'll be helping with your HD race.

Map of the district here for anyone who doesn't know the boundaries of District 146.

4. Borris at OPD
Following the CEC meeting last night, Borris surprised the Oil Patch Democrats, when he showed up at their meeting. He was very warmly received and asked to address the group, which he did and followed with some Q&A. Then in closing, he mentioned some of his endorsements. The president of OPD said, "Well you have ours." The crowd enthusiastically applauded that.

7. We got hungry
With the crowd, it was taking forever to order food and most people had come there directly after work. It actually started at 6pm. Some may have still been there, but we left about 9pm and they were just taking down the OPD banner. Maybe you didn't recognize a few who were left or maybe they moved into the bar area to continue with the brew.

You should have called. We headed over to Niko Niko's to eat.

8. I ended up sitting with some folks I met on the way in. The
were progressives, but not involved. A couple of other Dems showed up and we worked on recruiting them for DFH and the SD conventions, etc.

11. If you ask me, there is only one choice. There's only
one real Democrat in the race. And only one candidate that Stephanie Miller doesn't refer to as "Squeezy McFeel Pants" because of his cheerleader bill.

13. art - you really ought to do a little googling on Al Edwards
that should clear up any doubts you have. Don't take my word for it, he is as DINO as they get. He did not leave the state with the other dems to protest redistricting, and he spends his legislative time in Craddick's back pocket. In most of the primaries, we could all agree we were choosing between Democrats, that is not the case here.

14. You're taking this personally
I should not have posted a fiery response to your post a while back and frankly, was glad to see it was pulled from DU.

Compare the candidates and forget about the rest. This is politics. I'm friends with people who have spent a considerable amount of time working on Mr. Edwards' and Mr. Bennett's campaign just as I'm friends with people who campaigned for the other candidates I did not support in the primary.

I don't understand how this race is causing damage to the Party. That would be like saying that the supporters of one of Tom DeLay's Republican opponents in the primary are hurting the Party.
