2. Thanks, Pard. It's nice to "see" you.
I hang out in The Lounge most of the time. :hi:

3. Post 291 burned down yesterday.
Talk about a bummer! We were almost there to eat a pork chop dinner when we saw the smoke. We turned the corner and there it was. Damn the luck!

4. That's terrible.
Keep us posted on their efforts to rebuild (I'm guessing they'll have a fundraiser sometime down the line).

5. I sure will, Pard. We will rebuild! I went from there to...
VFW Post 8566 in Bacliff to a meeting. I'm a member of both. I made a motion we donate $200 immediately to the American Legion's emergency fund. It passed unanimously along with an offer to use the VFW Post Hall for meetings, etc. I went back to 291 and helped secure the premises for the rest of the night.

6. Fire claims historic American Legion post (pictures)
Sgt. Danny Sheppard of the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office inspects the debris from the American Legion Post 291 in San Leon. Firefighters from six agencies fought the fire that destroyed the building Friday.

7. American Legion plans to rebuild
Come heck, high water or fire, the members of American Legion Post 291 plan to be serving steaks with the fixings Friday night.

The beer should start flowing by Tuesday.

A fire destroyed the nearly 55-year-old post — one of the oldest in the state — Friday. All that remained of the hall that also served as the hub of the San Leon community were a few outer walls and charred ruins.

“We ain’t shut down, just closed for four or five days,” said Post Commander John White, who was joined by fellow post members Saturday morning to survey the damage and contemplate the future. “All of the area VFWs and other American Legions have been coming by offering their help.

“We’ll be back,” White said. “We’ll need some help, lots of help, (but) we’ll be back.”
