Developing: Repubs break quorum in Senate Finance
Right when Senate Finance began, Shapiro attempted to withdraw the committee substitute to HB 1. Ogden immediately said that he hadn't recognized her, so her motion was out of order. She tried again to be recognized, and he ignored her.

Shapiro got pissed and left the hearing room, quickly followed by Deuell, Williams, and a few other Rs - removing the quorum. Ogden then referred to the committee rules that allow them to proceed once a quorum was initially established, regardless of who slinks out the back door. They won't be able to vote out CSHB 1 without 8 votes, but they can continue working on it.

So, where are the missing members of Finance holding their quorum busting party? New Mexico? So the Rs are doing the exact same thing that the Ds did during redistricting - think DPS will get sent to round 'em up? But here's the kicker: this is about funding schools. They're walking because they don't want to fund schools in an equitable manner.

1. Missing
Update: Ogden sends the Sargent at Arms after the missing members!
As of this writing, only Ogden, West, Zaffirini, Madla, Whitmire, Duncan, and Staples are still present. According to PinkDome

Update: Ogden sends the Sargent at Arms after the missing members!

Wonder if Ogden is on the phone with DeLay to get the FAA and Homeland Security to track them down.

2. Where do you think they are?
Shapiro is such a nasty, ahem, individual. Would we be within our rights to form a posse of enraged citizens to track down these republiCons that are maliciously holding up the People's business, pounce on them ,hogtie 'em, toss them over the back of a pack mule and deliver them back to Mr. Ogden at the Capitol Building?

3. If we're really lucky...
they went out to lunch together and got hit by a bus.

I can't say it often enough...I know Bob Deuell and he's an ass.

7. he's not gone yet
He's my congressman. Should I call him up? Of course, the last time I talked with his office I made it clear I never wanted to speak with them again . . .

8. I wish I understood why Shapiro wanted to withdraw the committee
substitute to HB1. This is the thing that has been getting all the attention with the teacher pay raise, the cutting of the $500 health care stiped to support staff, not funding the elementary math text book adoption, four years of science and math for the recommended high school plan, etc. I mean, I think I'm right about this - ?? What caused her to want to withdraw this? I can't find this info anywhere.
