"Kinky" makes ballot, "Grandma" doesn't
State says OK to 'Kinky,' 'That's tough' to 'Grandma'
On Monday, Secretary of State Roger Williams denied Mrs. Strayhorn's request to appear on the November ballot with the nickname "Grandma." He also decided that Kinky Friedman could remain Kinky, though he'll be listed as Richard "Kinky" Friedman.

The race for governor is filled with nicknames, and Mrs. Strayhorn – the state comptroller who campaigns under the slogan "One Tough Grandma" – said she feels discriminated against because hers got nicked.

"I am Grandma. And that's how people know me and address me," she said Monday.

2. No one knows her as Grandma...

Most people don't even know what her most recent last name is.

She's just focusing on this to sidestep any discussion of the issues.

4. If Kinky's Richard "Kinky" Friedman why isn't Hairspray James "Rick" Perry
Why does Rick get to use his nickname without listing his given first name and then his nickname in quotes?

WOULD SOMEONE PLEASE PASS THIS QUESTION ALONG TO C4N3P WHO SEEMS EAGER TO SUE PUBLIC OFFICIALS OVER SUCH MATTERS?

6. Hey I hope she goes for it
But I think the official explanation from the SOS, was that Rick is a well recognized short name for Richard, MoFo's name is James Richard Perry. But I agree with you, at the very least it should be listed as James Richard "Rick" Perry to be consistent.

Strayhorn won't be Grandma on the ballot
Will challenge state ruling in court

Williams said Strayhorn's appropriation of the Grandma moniker is sloganeering and, as such, prohibited by Section 52.031 of the Texas Election Code. He ordered that her name, Carole Keeton Strayhorn, appear on the November ballot.

Williams also ruled Monday that the other independent candidate for governor appear on the ballot as Richard "Kinky" Friedman.

At a news conference on the front lawn of a campaign headquarters she calls Grandma's House, Strayhorn said she intends to file suit sometime this week in state District Court to have Williams' ruling struck down. When asked if she might be wasting the court's time, Strayhorn said it was Williams who is cluttering the docket.

"I'm not tying up the court. It's the secretary of state who incorrectly interpreted the law," Strayhorn said. "Grandma is a not a slogan. Grandma is who I am."

8. Does anyone know how Chris Bell will appear on the ballot?
If Strayhorn gets in a snit and files over Rick Perry not being list as James Rick Perry, we could end up seeing Robert Christopher Bell.

9. Good point merci_me
Didn't know Robert was his first name. I just figured it was Christopher as his first name.
