Rising Texas Latino star to watch
I've sung the praises of my state representative on this forum before, but it looks like others have taken notice too. Look whose name is being bandied about in the Dallas Morning-News for our next mayor.

MILLER'S DEPARTURE MAY OPEN DOOR FOR LATINO MAYOR

One minute, Rafael Anchía was hearing, "Congratulations!"

The next, he was hearing, "Run, run, run!"

<snip>

Which Latino candidate can harness support and financial backing from both sides of the Trinity River and become the first Hispanic mayor of Dallas?

Mr. Anchía, who last year was named one of the top freshman legislators by Texas Monthly magazine, said simply that he was overwhelmed by Ms. Miller's announcement; he wouldn't commit one way or the other on his political plans.

Some have speculated that his political path leads to statewide leadership. Others say a run and successful term as mayor would position him for national leadership positions.

He's one of several Latinos who are considered potential mayoral candidates with any chance of winning the top post in city government.
<snip>

I've always thought he's got what it takes to go far, like statewide office or Congress, but mayor could be a step on the way. But part of me hopes he doesn't; Dallas mayor can be a nasty, thankless job.

Whatever he does, keep you eye on this rising star.

3. I think you're right
With no repuke opponent, he's a shoo-in for re-election. Plus, the Legislature will be in session during the mayoral campaign. Best to get more experience in Austin, IMHO.

4. Yes, with more experience, he'll be a better leader...

than the current crop of leaders that are there. Dunham and some of the others are just so abrasive that they don't come across well, and occassionally shoot themselves in the foot.

Anchia on the otherhand...

He's mild-mannered, smart, and passionate. He doesn't play the parliamentary games like some of the others. He knows when to fight and what battles to fight.

I like him, and maybe it's because I've always been treated nice when I saw him.

2. I like Anchia, he's very smart
He was on the TX House Elections Committee. One of our few allies on the committee. He's really smart I knew he would be recognized for being one of the best Freshman Legislators last session. We also came very close to losing him. He was in the car that killed Representative Joe Moreno in 2005. I'm sure that's still a very painful memory for him. I hope he does continue to be a great public servant.

Good luck to him whatever he decides.

Sonia
