Crawford paper hit by Repubes
Got this email from a fellow Yellow-dog. I searched the article and added it to the letter:
Sent: Thursday, September 30, 2004 10:05 AM
Subject: Lone Str Iconoclast

I think all of you have seen the endorsement of Kerry in the Crawford newspaper, Lone Star Iconoclast. If you haven't you should read it on the internet. This article is well written and is a good synopsis of what GWB has done to destroy our country as we knew it.
Today's San Antoino Express-News had an article this morning http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/texas/stories/MYSA093004.1A.crawford.d0640b14.html
pointing our that some of the people in Crawford are canceling their subscriptions and advertising and taking the newspapers out of their racks . The papers circulation is very small and the editor suggests they might not be able to weather the storm of cancellations.
I want to do my part to protect our 'freedom of speech' and assure the people in Crawford get a chance to read the truth about our president, or any president. I started a subscription today to try to help give them this chance.
The newspaper is a weekly and the phone number is (254) 675-3336. Subscriptions by mail are $45 per year and im sure you can take it for less than a year.

REMEMBER THE ALAMO? YES, BUT REMEMBER THE DIXIE CHICKS AND WHAT HAPPENED TO THEM WHEN THEY POINTED OUT THAT BUSH LIED WHEN HE SAID HE WAS A TEXAN (among many other things).
Lets send Bush back East where he really belongs - Texas doesn't need him, but we need the small newspapers that have a right to express their opinion.

1. Welcome, monteig!
Good post...but the subject line should be changed. A fund-raising drive is in order for this guy, enough to hold him over until the repubs forget. This is a small town, with no other pape. The locals will have to advertise, they'll want a paper. They'll come back to him, or at least, most will eventually. We need to be sending him money to weather the storm. How about it DUers? Send the $45, but don't make him go to the expense of actually mailing it, unless you're interested in what goes on in Crawford. Just help the guy out. What he did took enormous balls.

2. San Fran area here. Heard over radio last night.... a caller
mentioned the Crawford paper/editor and what they were doing and going through. The caller said he DID subscribe to that paper so as to help them out. Caller wanted others to know they can do so as well.

I think this is a fantastic idea. Thanks for this post....

emailed widely. This was the quote that made me do it:

As of Wednesday morning, more than a dozen readers had canceled their subscription and six advertisers had pulled their spots from the paper. Smith expects there will be more, and he's preparing for the worst. "It will probably put us under," he said.

That's a lot for a little paper like that.

Edited: I actually DO want the paper, so I'm getting it. Any local paper that has that kind of balls will probably be worth reading.

Phone number in post above.

Ask 'em how many out of town subscriptions they've gotten and report back! :)

9. what happened to the ad idea?
I read about it on another thread. Why can't we get up some money for an ad about DU?

I'll send cash if nothing comes of this idea but I'd much rather see us do an ad that will make people aware of DU. And I'm sure the publisher wouldn't mind having some ad space taken up during the time it takes for some of the jerks there to cool off.

I'd contribute toward the purchase of an ad and I will definitely buy a subscription as soon as I can get through...

I think DUers can help pull it through the soft time...

20. I just subscribed and thanked the lady
for what the paper did. She said that their reporters are getting heckled and harrassed, and that it is just an awful environment there. She said that she was not personally political, but this has made her so.

She said they are getting subscriptions from around the country, so things are looking somewhat better.

We all need to support this paper! Hell, I didn't really have an extra $45 this week, but felt this was a good cause. I can always use the paper in my language arts class to compare with our local paper.

I'm in for a subscription and if DU wants to run an ad, I'm in for that as well. I hope everyone is spreading this story around. Makes me so mad that someone actually has the guts to tell the truth and they get repaid in cancellations. AAARRRRGGGGGG.

But I've got to say, I sure do love the hearts of the people on this board. You are all the best. :)

38. More than worth the read!
><We have been told by several avid Bush supporters that the days when newspapers publish editorials without personal repercussions are over. As publishers, we have printed editorials for decades, and have endorsed candidates, both Republican and Democrat. When Bush was endorsed four years ago, the Gore supporters did not respond with threats, nor did Democrats when we endorsed Reagan twice. Republicans did not threaten us personally or our business when we endorsed Carter and Clinton for their first terms.><
