early voting..to do or not to do
Edited on Fri Feb-22-08 02:41 PM by movie_girl99
I have a read a few posts about people who do not trust early voting. On Wednesday at the Obama rally in Dallas, they were talking about the two part process and were encouraging people to early vote because we (Obama) could win the early vote. I had planned on voting tomorrow but after reading some posts I'm confused and am not sure if i should wait until March 4th. Any advice or expertise??

1. I voted yesterday. I had to because I work all day as an election judge.
That being said I voted on paper. It was scanned but at least it can be re-counted by a person.

2. If you are in Dallas county, I have a very high opinion of our elections administrator.
If you really want to early vote, I think it will be ok. But it's true, if you vote early you get a touchscreen and if you vote on the election day you get a paper ballot.

I'm waiting because I'm going to be there on election day anyway. :D

3. i am in Denton Co.
when i voted in '06 we had touch screens and i asked for a paper ballot. The folks working said that they didn't know where they were so i left and said i'd come back after I called Denton Co. elections office. I was told by the elections office that at the particular location that i went to, should have had paper ballots available. I went back a few days later and sure enough, I voted on paper. I will go to the nearest early voting location (carrollton public library) and if they don't have paper, i may wait and go on election day. The local UU Church is my location and i know they will have paper. Thanks!!!!

4. one more question
even if i vote early I plan to go back on the 4th and caucus. A friend of mine os worried that if she cant get back on the 4th that her vote wont count. Is that the case?

5. Nope -- tell her to get her voter registration card stamped to save
time. That will indicate she just voted in the primary since the cards are new, although there are supposed to be accurate lists at the precinct of who early voted in the Dem primary. They will probably stamp her card as a matter of course but I talked to someone the other day who'd just voted and she said they asked her if she wanted her card stamped.

8. it's way crazy.
I got a robocall the other day for Al Edwards claiming, among other things, that he's never done anything to embarrass us. The first thing that came to mind was the Sexy Cheerleading Law.

10. SNORT.
Does he have a primary opponent then?

We have something like 8 or 10 contested primary races. :wow:

12. Yes, actually.
Someone who's far less, um, entertaining. B-)

That's a lot of contested races up in your neck of the woods. Sounds like there's some house-cleaning going on.

13. Well, we are the dominant party now, so
if you get the nomination, you probably win in the fall. There are only 3 (I think) races against actual incumbents. One is against the sheriff, who has had some bad press lately. One is against a good incumbent judge, and the candidate, methinks, is relying on the fact that his name is, I kid you not, "Baraka" :eyes: And the third is against an incumbent party-switcher. heh. :hi:

15. I am working early voting in Harris County and we have to ask if you want your card stamped.
We are having a big Democratic turnout.

So much for Texas being a red state.

23. I came away with THREE items of proof I voted early, for caucus purposes.
The election officials in my precinct had their ducks in a row, that's for sure! I have:

A yellow slip of paper from them, that I was required to sign on site, that says that I voted in the Dem primary;

Then I have the BLUE SHEET of paper that is my copy of the precinct full page printout of my registration info. In other times, they retain it. THIS TIME, they gave it to me to take to the caucus as proof.

THIRD...they stamped my registration card that I voted in the Dem primary.

There should be no doubt that I voted in the Dem. primary!

6. If she votes early
that vote will count towards the delegates awarded through the primary. If she doesn't participate in the caucus, then she won't have a "vote" in the delegates selected through that process.

I think.

9. I thought the question was "can I still go to the caucus if I vote early"?
Edited on Fri Feb-22-08 04:05 PM by gkhouston
but probably my brain isn't working. It usually isn't. :silly:

on edit: and upon re-reading, you seem to have the correct answer. Gotta love the Texas Two-Step.

19. I thank Howard Dean for that
If it wasn't for Dean in 2004, and Democracy for America/Texas since then, I wouldn't be trained and so involved. It was Dean that told us "You have the power". He was my first hope peddler. And even if we failed that time, most of inspired by that campaign stayed engaged and this time we won't fail.

50 state strategy all the way to the White House!

22. I early voted. Now I wish I'd waited. I had a touchscreen (voltronics brand, I think)...
Voltronics, or votronics....something like that. I don't trust them. It's very disconcerting to walk away knowing there is no proof that I voted the way I did.

I plan to go back to the caucus, though. Not that I understand that process. So I'll just show up (I think I can make it there in time after work), and hope someone tells me what to do.

16. Voted today in Ellis county..
We only have paper scanned ballots out here, so it does not make a difference if you vote early or not. I know when we were in Tarrant I believe we had to use the touchscreen when voting early, but that was 4 years ago.
