OK; I'm a precinct chair who isn't all fired up to be a delegate. |
|
Honestly, I would LOVE to be a delegate, but for a candidate I truly believe in. I know I can register as "uncommitted" or for the candidate of my choice, but those are pretty much non-starters. In reality, I'd just like to make sure the precinct convention gets off to a good start and then bail out.
I'm honestly conflicted about what I'm going to do tomorrow night. I should be excited, but I'm really not.

Even though the precinct chair is the default temporary chair, there's nothing wrong with you appointing a temporary chair. Or, if you want to just kick it off then git, run someone else for permanent chair. Electing a permanent chair and secretary are the first in the order of business.
I'm not looking forward to this either. I'm not the precinct chair, but the precinct chair has already called and asked if I would chair the meeting since we're expecting probably 100 people, the most since 1984 when we had about 75.
Most every year it's me and my wife. We argue over who should be chair and who should be secretary. I grab the packet from the precinct judges, declare myself the permanent chair and she, according to Robert Rules of Order, challenges the chair! We have fun with it.

2. Well, I might do that. |
|
However, if no one there has had any training, I will stay and run the show. I'd hate to see things get too messed up. If I stay, I will probably just go with "uncommitted".

3. Wow. Your typical convention sounds like mine |
|
In mine, there's me (the Precinct chair) my spouse and my neighbor. We elect ourselves delegates to the Senatorial convention, pass some resolutions, then head home. The whole thing usually lasts about 1/2 hour.
I've never chaired a real meeting. I'm scared about tomorrow!

4. Oh GOPisEvil, you mean the drunk caucus at the state convention isn't appealing enough? |
|
Seriously though I do feel for you. I'm sorry you're not excited about it. I'm in hog heaven. For a political junkie like me, all these visits and personal contacts and feeling important are a total rush. I just got back from seeing Michelle Obama. :loveya:
I'm hardly sleeping. I'll crash on Wednesday but it's been super crazy busy in my neck of our woods.
I hope you can at least think about attending the SD convention for the purpose of party building. You know our state conventions are fun. We see lots of our DU friends in person.
I agree that it doesn't have to be you running the show. If someone from one of the campaigns asks to be permanent chair, let the people in your PCT decide.
Your chances of moving on as a delegate as uncommitted might be pretty tough this year. If you don't have enough people to be viable as a caucus, you're taking your chances.
I hope you at least feel better about it once it's over.

6. Oh, I will participate in drunk caucus. |
|
That is a certainty. I will participate in the state convention one way or another. I'm sure they always need volunteers.
Also, my precinct gets only one delegate to state, so it should be someone fired up for his or her candidate.

5. I'm probably going to sign in as Uncommitted myself |
|
I've been through enough training sessions and read the rules so I think I actually understand how the thing is supposed to work. And besides I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and doggone it, people like me!
But if one faction or the other takes over my convention, I guess I get to go home in time to catch The Office on TBS. Enjoy those resolutions, suckers!

Somebody wants this gig, they can have it. Maybe I'll get to a watch party after all.
