1. Hays County SD 25
This notice comes from Kathi Thomas who says this is a new location for the convention

Saturday, March 29

Wallace Middle School
1500 W Center St
Kyle, TX 78640

Mapquesting the school- if you come in from 150 from the West side of the county, turn to the right when you get to the turn to go into Kyle- it will be down the road- I can’t tell from the map if it is on the left or right side, I believe it is on the left- at the corner of Center Street and Castillo St.

49. More information on Travis convention

TRAVIS COUNTY DEMOCRATIC CONVENTION, SATURDAY MARCH 29, 2008

Sign-in begins at 7:00 a.m.

Convention convenes at 10:00 a.m.

Expect the County Convention to last until at least 7:00p.m. --- and we hope you plan to stay the day enjoying being in arena filled with thousands upon thousands of like-minded Democrats!!!

PLACE: Travis County Exposition Center, Luedecke Arena, 7311 Decker Lane
#37 Colony Park bus runs to the Expo Ctr about every 30 minutes for most of the day on Saturdays

Concession stand open from 7:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m.

The Travis County Democratic Party (TCDP) welcomes all Democrats to the 2008 County Convention for both Senate District 14 and the Travis County part of Senate District 25. Show your support for your candidate and elect delegates to the state convention to be held in Austin June 6 and 7, 2008!

Because of the thousands of delegates and alternates that we are expecting, TCDP strongly suggests that you arrive EARLY to sign in. In years past, the TCDP has always mailed a courtesy postcard to all who were elected Delegates and Alternates out of their Precinct Conventions advising them of the County Convention. However, this year is different; we simply cannot mail out courtesy postcards. This is due to the sheer volume of people who attended the March 4 Precinct Conventions -- which is a good thing!! Yet our office is now in over-drive entering the more than 13,000+ delegate and alternate names into our database which must be entered in a very, very short amount of time. Also, the cost of postage for the these courtesy postcards (over $5,000!) would have been prohibitive.

HOWEVER, the TCDP will be contacting all the Precinct Convention Delegation Chairs, our current Travis County Democratic Precinct Chairs, local campaign organizers for the two Presidential campaigns and will also be sending out alerts via our E-Newsletter list. So word will certainly get out to all these many delegates and alternates!!. And if you were Delegate or Alternate, just come to the convention -- your Delegation Chair will be given all the information necessary that you will need.

AND even if you were not elected a Delegate or Alternate, the County Convention is open to the public; no charge. Anyone is welcome to attend. But only Delegates and Alternates can participate.

Parking at the Expo Center is $5, which is less than the $7 that the Palmer Events Center charged in 2006.

Don't expect to get a postcard notice. Every PCT is responsible for notifying their own delegation to show up.

2. SD-17: Alief Elsik HS
From the e-mail I sent to all delegates/alternates:

The Senate District 17 Convention will take place on Saturday, March 29 at Alief Elsik high school. The address is 12601 High Star, Houston TX 77072. It's located on the SE corner of High Star and Dairy Ashford, approximately two blocks from the intersection of Westpark and Dairy-Ashford. There is an exit to Dairy-Ashford (south) off IH-10 but not the Westpark tollway; Dairy-Ashford is accessible form the Westpark feeder. Park across the street on High Star or in front of Elsik on High Star; the parking lots off Dairy-Ashford in front of the school will be reserved for candidates, elected officials, and other speakers.

Here is the correct SD-17 website, though it contains no new information at the moment.

The convention begins at 9 a.m. will end no later than 4 p.m. Sign-in begins at 8 a.m and there will be an orientation for first-timers. Student groups will be selling breakfast and lunch items.

In addition to the formal business of electing delegates to the state convention (Precinct 350 will send 2 delegates and 2 alternates -- there are also several at-large delegates and alternates to be elected from SD-17 -- to Austin on June 5 -7, 2008), there will be speeches by candidates and elected officials, workshops, and information booths from candidates, clubs and organizations. Various rules, resolutions, and items for approval will be passed out of committee all during the day at various times. The convention process is hectic and flows haphazardly; Democratic candidates visiting all of the SD conventions taking place around Houston will arrive at various unscheduled times throughout the day, business will be interrupted, they will speak for a few minutes and depart, and then business will resume. Thus the nature of the SD convention -- as with the precinct convention -- will seem uneven and maybe even a little disorganized; this may be exacerbated by the expected massive attendance. Be prepared for delays, some frustration on the part of organizers and attendees -- you know, the usual. ;^)

29. SD 7 Harris County -- CORRECTION
Edited on Thu Mar-13-08 08:57 PM by merci_me
The new location is Sam Houston Race Park Pavilion and the sign-in starts at 8AM. Until the 19th, even this is still not written in blood

Here is the link to the SD 7 website. http://web2.airmail.net/sgross/sd7/index.html
Watch the site for more info and any updates.

Two years ago we were at that HCC location and with a total of 500 attendees, we were comfortable but at our limit. This year, we have about 2800 delegates and 2800 alternates and of course, it's an open meeting. The pavilion will be bursting at the seams, with even 4600, so our SD 7 chair, Steve Gross and our SDEC chairs are scrambling to find something larger, by the 19th, at which point we will be locked in.

They are estimating, with 30 laptops, it could take 3 hours just to check in.

Edited on Fri Mar-14-08 01:31 PM by merci_me
We have appox 2300 delegates and 2300 alternates. BUT, I had our total right, appox 4600 total, plus guests. How's that for somekind of math. Spell check doesn't catch math.

I don't know about other precincts, but we announced the conventions would run from 8:30am to about noon or 1:00pm. Maybe as the delegation learns it's now projected to run 8:00am til 5:00 or 6:00pm, some will drop out. But then again, these are all people who put up with our caucus scramble, with grace and humor. So, who knows?

We may overflow over to the track, place a few bets and win enough money to pay for the pavilion. We're looking at a total output of $12,000+. Seriously, we're hoping to get donations averaging $3.00 each and various clubs in SD 7 are kicking in what they can. The small Galleria Area Dems kicked in Tuesday night and we're going to hit up West Houston Democrats (a much larger club) at tomorrow's meeting.

I'll have to tell our SD chair. I hear we had the police called to at least one of our precincts last week.

Fortunately, our precinct was packed and somewhat confused, but ran very smoothly. My husband is the Clinton delegation chair and he and the Obama chair have been out for coffee twice and e-mail a few times a day, since the caucus. My husband has done this several times. It's a first for the Obama guy, who will also chair the full delegation. The Obama chair has tons of questions and Jim's helping him out. The guy is really fast and a great communicator, so he'll do just fine. He's fairly new to Texas, in fact, we just met him for the first time at the caucus. I just hope we can keep him active.

15. 1522 delegates and space for only 1200
That's the dilemma in SD-17. The chair's response? "Well, not all the delegates show up anyway."

It would cost $14K to move to the George R Brown. The SD treasury has a thousand bucks in it. The chair said "we'll collect $25 from each delegate, maybe up to a hundred".

I am not shitting you. He said this to the senate district caucus of precinct chairs last night at the CEC.

We appear to be headed for a clusterfuck of epic proportions at the SD conventions, people. Think your precinct convention x 10. Except with the possibility of disenfranchising legions of these new energized voters. It will take hours just to credential thousands of delegates and alternates. Forget about the challenges and the resolution of those. Starting late, running late, many delegates not seated while business gets conducted.

And if your senate district chair has stacked the committees with supporters of one candidate, like mine has ... look out.

21. I just did the math. They're assuming that less than 80% of delegates
and zero alternates will show up in a year when the delegates actually matter. That's not fiscal responsibility, that's idiocy. There's no way a full 20% of people are going to fail to show and not get an alternate to replace them. I wonder what the media would make of this.

23. Since I've only heard this information second-hand, I wouldn't be a
credible source, but if pdittie is so inclined... I understand the financial constraint and in a normal election cycle, they could probably get away with the smaller venue because the turnout would be low but you know damned well that's not going to be the case this year. What's it going to look like on the news if they have to turn away 20% of their delegates because they don't have anywhere to put them? Or were they planning on cramming them in the room anyway and hoping the fire marshal doesn't turn up? After what happened on March 4, assuming that the people themselves aren't going to turn up is at best wishful thinking. At worst, it's deliberately orchestrating an overcrowded event to play into the "caucuses are an undemocratic zoo" meme.

And I wonder how many other counties and SDs this is being played out in and we don't know about it. Yet.

at http://www.sd17hcdp.org/

There are training sessions you can attend which are mentioned on the main webpage and you can click through on the red box at the top which contains the text "Convention Information". The sentences, "Seating is limited so don't expect to get in if you wait to 10:00 to register. Seating is on a First Come First Serve Basis." make it sound like they have not set up an overflow room and are still simply hoping that they don't get a full turnout. :banghead: Do they want to be on the news all week next week for turning away delegates because they failed to secure a large enough facility?

64. Precinct 3339 - Senate District 2 - Newbie Question
Hello, I'm new to the Democratic Party. I was asked this year in the Caucus to be a Precinct Delegate. I explained that I didn't know what was involved, and after a couple of words, was told that I would need to attend a meeting at Lake June and HWY175 on 3/29. I asked what would be required of me and I was told that I would receive a packet in the mail describing the activities. It sounded easy enough, but now, four days before 3/29, I still have no information on what is required and where exactly I should go.

If I'm not mistaken, Senate District 2 covers my precinct. In the attached, they have the location as being a Spruce HS. Is this where I should go? Where can I find some documentation on the proceedings and what I should be prepared to experience? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

The Senate District 12 convention will be at the ritzy Gaylord Texan Resort and Convention Center in Grapevine, starting at 10:30 a.m., according to Tarrant Democrat Party Chair Art Brender.
