SOUTH COUNTY- U. S. Rep. Kevin Brady, R-The Woodlands, and his Democratic opponent Jim Wright, of New Caney, will face off in their first debate Tuesday.

Co-sponsored by Montgomery College's Lyceum Series and the Montgomery County Chapter of the League of Women Voters, the two candidates for the newly formed 8th Congressional District will begin with a meet and greet from 6-7 p.m., followed by the formal debate from 7-8:30 p.m. Both events will be in the Montgomery College Center for the Arts, Building D Theatre, located at 3200 College Park Drive on the college campus, which is one-half mile west of Interstate 45 between Conroe and The Woodlands. Julie Martineau, who is representing the League of Women Voters, will moderate the debate. Jim Fredricks, editor of The Courier, and Tony Fuller, professor of speech at Montgomery College, will ask questions. Audience members will be invited to submit questions during the debate. Each candidate will have time to respond to a question, with a rebuttal opportunity from the opponent, then a brief follow-up by the original speaker. Brady said Thursday that he is looking forward to the debate. "People in Montgomery County know me well," he said. "They know that I am a conservative family man who believes that they are overtaxed and that the federal government wastes too much of their tax dollars. "They know that when I have a seat at the table, they have a seat at the table." Brady said fighting for road funding, lowering taxes, such as the current move for sales tax deductibility on federal income taxes, and securing the new veterans clinic marked several key issues that he would like to focus on. Wright did not return multiple calls. Yeah, right! BTW, I also warped the headline.
