My so-called friends pushed me into a fight I didn't want, didn't need, and one that was certainly not in my best interest. Sound familiar? Sounds to me like what our Republican leadership and our governor have done. None of us wanted redistricting. Our state Rep. Bob Hunter didn't want it. Our state Sen. Troy Fraser didn't want it. Even Taylor County Republican Party Chairman Paul Washburn said in the Sept. 19, 2003, Abilene Reporter-News that we should ''send a message to state leaders that Abilene-area residents oppose redistricting.''

Lubbock folks didn't want it either. U.S. Rep. Charlie Stenholm, D-Abilene, and Randy Neugebauer, R-Lubbock, wouldn't have picked this fight, but I guess our ''friends'' don't really care about what we want.

1. Stenholm called me

I made a donation to Charlie Stenholm and he called me Friday night just before the debate. I had included a note that said I live in DeLay's district and that this contribution is my way of apologizing.

During the conversation I told him that he's not my kind of Democrat. (I am a progressive / liberal.) However, while my son was stationed in Abilene, he told me that Stenholm really takes care of the troops, even though most of them keep their voter registration in their home districts. That meant a lot to me because I know how the GOP treats the troops - badly.

What a nice thing for Stenholm to do. And what a great thing for you to do too, considering he's a conservative Dem. I know how you feel. But even our conservatives are better than their moderate repukes.
