Austin GOTV Workshop Oct. 16
Get out your calculators and maps! Latinos for America is returning to Austin to conduct a half-day GOTV workshop on Saturday, October 16. You’ll walk out of the session with workable plans that can be implemented for the last two weeks of this campaign cycle. Participants will also learn about HAVA (the Help America Vote Act of 2002) and how to help safeguard the vote.

There will be two identical sessions — one from 8:30 to noon and the other from 1 to 4:30. Class size is limited to 30 in each session so that the instructors can provide individual attention. Democracy for America is subsidizing the cost so that it will be $25.00 per person. Governor Dean and DFA have made a commitment to Texas!

For more information about Latinos for America and the Austin training, go to www.latinosforamerica.com/.

To register, email Teri Sperry at Teri@democracyfortexas.org. Please give your name, city, phone number, and which session you would like to sign up for. Also list your group affiliation (e.g., a particular campaign you're working for, a precinct you're organizing, or a constituency group you want to help turn out in November). Payment may be made by check or cash at the workshop.

1. Sending two
Our club voted last weekend to send two members. We picked young ones (in their late 20's) so that they'll (1) have the energy to follow through, (2) remember what they learned, and (3) keep giving.

It seems to me that when you train a young person, you carry on.

We have to take back Texas.

2. As a follow-up
Our two members said the event was great! They came home filled with ideas and plans. (And, a nifty thick handout to copy and hand around!) They will hold a mini-workshop for the entire club next Saturday.

Democracy for Texas is doing a great job. Let's encourage them to continue to hold workshops all over the state (say, four locations for each workshop) during the coming year to train new folks to start working for two years from now. If each county organization and/or club would send someone to the workshop and then they could come back and teach, it's a force multiplier.

I've been around politics since the 1960's and I learned stuff from the information they brought back. I think this is a worthwhile project.

3. Brazosboomer you can help get Texas more workshops
This message below, went out on the list today. This won't happen until next year, but we have got to keep the Texas movement happening. We need all the help we can get to keep our troops motivated. Please vote for Texas as a venue.

Glad to hear your team got some good training. And that was super fabulous news about the Houston Chronicle endorsing Richard Morrison. Help is on the way!!

Thanks

Sonia

DEMOCRACY FOR TEXAS NEEDS YOUR VOTE!

The countdown to Election Day continues. We know it’s hard to think beyond November 2, but we are — and we need your help for a different kind of vote.

DFT has submitted a proposal to host Democracy Fest, a gathering of progressives from around the country. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to bring more grassroots training and nationally recognized speakers to Texas. It’s a chance to meet with like-minded people from around the country and share ideas. Most of all, it’s an event that will give us feedback on our efforts to take back our state and give us direction for the future.

Please go to: http://myvoteismyvoice.com/html/deanfest_2005.html and look at the proposals. Unless you really want to go to California or Virginia if we don’t win, we ask that you vote “Texas, No Second Choice.” We know that no one can put on this event like we can!

If we win, we’ll be asking for your ideas about who and what you’d like to see at Democracy Fest. And if you have questions in the meantime, please drop us a note at info@democracyfortexas.org.

THIS is what you can do for democracy this week!

Your DFT Steering Committee,
Marla Camp, Glen Maxey, Teri Sperry, and Fran Vincent
