How important is high school football in your part of Texas? |
|
I've been watching the first season of "Friday Night Lights" on DVD, and I find it shocking that high school football could be so important to these towns in Texas. I lived in TX for 8 years, but I grew up in California, in a town that was very low-key about high school football.
Is high school football really that intense in Texas communities?

1. Oh, lord, yes. All over the South, too. |

"Friday Night Lights" isn't fiction, it's a documentary. :D Much like "King of the Hill"
That said, it's more important in small towns than in large urban areas, but it's still all about the football. :hi: My Louisiana small town dwelling family.... when the high school football team is doing well, the ENTIRE TOWN goes to the game. :D

One little known rumor about Charlie Billingsley (played by Tim McGraw in the movie) is that he was living in a small town near Odessa, then he was, ahem, "discovered" by Permian High. Suddenly, his whole family was able to move to Odessa, his dad got a new job, and they had a nice house.
Yes, Texas takes its high school football very seriously.

3. It wasn't important at my high school |

But then maybe it's because our football team kind of sucked, and I grew up in Arlington. My senior year I went to the Beastie Boys concert instead of that Homecoming crap. :)
