1. I thank God they're not in Dallas...yet
They're worse than ClearChannel, IMHO.

2. Check to see when this will be aired.
I just posted on a different thread in the discussion board (I think) that said Sinclair was airing this junk program on 10/23. If that's true, it's the World Series opening game! It'd give you ANOTHER reason to scream at the stations AND the advertisers without just sounding like a partisan Dem.

3. IF you're in SA or in the broadcast area, please watch tonight and post
the local advertisers here that you see on the news.

I also intend to call the national advertisers, like Yum brands, to let them know I will boycott their products. Sinclair may not be in DFW, but the actions they are taking are offensive to all.

4. You don't have to live in Texas...
...to stop shopping at Walmart, buy Johnson & Johnson or eat at Whataburger.

5. Yup, but the point of locals calling is that it hits the local channels
from local residents who would actually shop in their area. I agree about the national advertisers.

6. National Advertiser email blast.
We're not near SA, so...

Here is an email blast of national Sinclair advertisers that didn't bounce back on me:

7. thanks reprehensor
Our only hope is to put pressure on the advertisers that have a national presence. They don't want to lose half or more than half of their market.

8. Differing opinions on that...
If there was a Sinclair affiliate in my market, I would be calling every one of their local advertisers and letting them know they won't be getting my bidness if Sinclair keeps it up.

It is more likely that a local marketing exec. can shake the tree at the local level, faster than national pressure, that's what I've been reading on various blogs.

If you are in SA, fire away! I have to focus on the national advertisers from Dallas.

And the FEC, and the FCC, and sign petitions, etc, etc, etc...

Hoo-Ah!

9. I agree-I talked with an advertising rep from a large national chain
who said that the problem is, since they sell to ABC, NBC, etc, but then the LOCAL channels are the ones that buy the advertising for their own stations, the nationals have little control over what a local station actually buys. I told her that even so, because the national company is associated with an unethical station, it's in their interests to try to disassociate with that one. She said that it's much more effective to go to the local stations and advertisers. She also said, which was great, that media consolidation has made her job, as advert mgr, much more difficult.

What I've been doing today, since I don't live in SA, is to call the national companies and lodge a formal complaint. In two instances, the companies attempted to give me Sinclair's number to complain and I told them that was like complaining to a La-la-la wall. In two others, they made a point to say that they weren't explicitly advertising on the Kerry smear-I said that nobody was, but the fact that they associated themselves at all on the other 23 hours makes them complicit.

11. Focus on local advertising is having effect...
WGME loses ads over plan to air anti-Kerry film

WGME's plan to air a documentary critical of Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry prompted three Maine companies Thursday to pull their advertising from the Portland TV station.

Hannaford supermarkets, the Lee Auto Malls, and the law offices of Joe Bornstein withdrew their advertising indefinitely from WGME (Channel 13) over its plans to air "Stolen Honor: Wounds That Never Heal" on Oct. 23.

WGME's owner, Sinclair Broadcast Group, has ordered its 62 TV stations in local markets across the country to air the film without commercials.

The film shows Vietnam War veterans criticizing Kerry - a fellow veteran - for opposing the war after he served.

Alan Cartwright, WGME's general manager, declined to comment when contacted.

Hannaford, based in Scarborough with 46 supermarkets in Maine, decided to pull its ads so its name would not be associated with the film.

"Hannaford is apolitical, and our employees have varying views on issues," said Caren Epstein, Hannaford's spokeswoman. "We object to being positioned politically."

Epstein said she did not know how much Hannaford spends on advertising with WGME, but noted that the chain advertises on other Maine TV stations as well. She said Hannaford's ads will stay off WGME at least until after the documentary is aired.

12. Response received from Ancira
Edited on Fri Oct-15-04 06:55 AM by texasmom
Thank you for your comments.
We at the Ancira group of Automobile Dealerships are in business to sell
transportation. We do not endorse any political party nor do we purchase
our advertising in order to endorse a specific ideology. Our advertising
agency makes its placement in advance, most of the time about 3 months
ahead of time. We purchase from all the local TV stations, radio, and news
papers and the sole aim is to target customers looking for a vehicle. We
try to steer away from any bias or controversy.
Our employees are free to choose and vote for whatever party they feel
inclined to vote for. I'm sure we have a good representation from all the
parties but we do not nor will we try to influence them to make any choice
that is not their own.
We visited the Sinclair web site and following is the statement we found on
their front page:
We welcome your comments regarding the upcoming special news event
featuring the topic of Americans held as prisoners of war in Vietnam. The
program has not been videotaped and the exact format of this unscripted
event has not been finalized. Characterizations regarding the content are
premature and are based on ill-informed sources.

Massachusetts Senator John Kerry has been invited to participate. You can
urge him to appear by calling his Washington, D.C. campaign headquarters at
(202) 712-3000.
if you would like to make further comments on this matter, you may do so at:
comments@sbgi.net
We will continue to monitor the progress of the proposed forum to see how
fair and balanced it turns out, but let me repeat that our advertising is
purchased as a demographic analysis of the audience and their ability to
purchase a vehicle for their transportation and with no regard to any
political ideology. If a balanced presentation of the truth is not
achieved, we will consider having our advertising removed from that program.

Thank you,

Gilbert Ancira
