Have you been writing LTTEs?
I read this terrible letter in the Galveston Daily News. I have drafted a reply, but am still mulling over whether to send it. I don't know why, but putting my name out there in the paper makes me nervous.

Anyway, it would be nice to have more than one reply, so if any of you out there want to join me, here is the piece of garbage:

Vote For A True American To Run Our Great Country

Regarding the two presidential candidates, I am not black, white, Asian, Mexican, Republican or Democrat. I am an American and, as such, my vote goes to the candidate who best represents this great country of ours and is an American first and a politician second.

One of the candidates is a patriot who served our country in a time of war; the other did not and is not.

One understands the importance of winning the conflict in Iraq; the other does not.

One understands the importance of fighting terrorism on their turf; the other does not.

One swears his oath on the Bible; the other does not.

One has a silver tongue and makes vague promises of change; the other does not.

One salutes our flag and recites the Pledge of Allegiance; the other does not.

One is a charlatan; the other is not.

We live in an atomic world and there are no “do overs.” A true American should run this country — the other should not!

1. Ick! (To the original LTTE)
There is great power in local LTTEs, I understand. I need to do more, and will try to.

I know what you mean about putting your name out there. If you don't feel comfortable, at least send it and ask for your name to be withheld - if they printed it, it would still get a rebuttal out there.

2. I went ahead and sent it.
Unfortunately, they have a 200 word limit, so I had to cut it back. I don't like it near as much in it's bare bones state, but here is what I said:

Patrick Waits' letter was among the most erroneous and laughable pieces I have read recently. I even dispute that he is not party-affiliated. He sure has the talking points down to a T.

1) Does community organizing and public service not count as service to the country? Does only being a valiant soldier count? If so, W should never been elected, but that's a whole different story.

2) Iraq's a quagmire created by a lying administration. We've lost too much already.

3) We CREATED a terrorist training ground by invading Iraq as opposed to finishing the job in Afghanistan.

4) Obama took his Oath of Office on the Bible, and puts his hand on his heart during the pledge (and has led the pledge in the Senate). Just because you find it on Google, doesn't make it true.

5) The biggest charlatan is GW Bush who lied us into war, and the second John McCain, claiming to be a Maverick while voting with W 95% of the time.

6) Obama was born an American citizen. To question the citizenship of a devoted public servant is a pathetic and sad commentary on a party claiming to hold patriotism in such regard.

4. His or her name is Patrick, hehe
But come on, the things Patrick said could have been said by any race or gender. I've seen idiots of all colors and crotches.
