Davis beats Brimer; Tarrant Dems gain no ground in House
FORT WORTH -- Democrat Wendy Davis edged 20-year Republican lawmaker Kim Brimer on Tuesday in the state Senate District 10 race, but Democrats gained no ground in several competitive state House races in Tarrant County, according to unofficial and incomplete results.
Davis, a former Fort Worth city councilwoman, won by almost 7,000 votes, or 2.6 percent, with 100 percent of precincts reporting and more than 200,000 early votes and mail-in ballots counted. Nearly 46 percent of the registered voters in the district cast their ballots early in person and through mail-in ballots.
Davis' first call Tuesday night with the news of her victory was to her daughter who is attending college in Colorado.
"I feel remarkable. I feel humbled. I feel unbelievably honored that the people of this district made me their choice, and now I feel responsible to follow through with the commitments that I made to them to work as hard as I possibly can to improve their lives," Davis said from the downtown Fort Worth Hilton Hotel, where Democrats were holding an election watching party. "I will work as hard as I possibly can."
Davis said that she did not expect to win in the historically Republican-leaning district but that "voters were ready for change."
Brimer had not conceded by early Wednesday.
Brimer, who unsuccessfully sued to keep Davis' name off the ballot, has vowed to continue fighting her eligibility should she win the race.
