Lupe Valdez triumphant over Lowell Cannaday in bid for 2nd term as Dallas County sheriff
Pledging to continue "slow, steady" progress in her troubled jails, Dallas County Sheriff Lupe Valdez defeated Republican challenger Lowell Cannaday on Tuesday to win a second term.
Sheriff Valdez walked triumphantly through a crowd of supporters at an outdoor Election Night festival in Oak Cliff to watch Democrats win more victories in local races.
"The voters are smarter than we give them credit for," Sheriff Valdez said before taking the stage to do TV interviews as the crowd chanted her name. "Even though I was criticized a lot, they can see progress is made."
Mr. Cannaday, the former Irving police chief, was his party's big hope to win back the sheriff's office and jump-start a political resurgence.
But that surge never came.
