Republican Judges Swept Out Of Office

POSTED: 5:36 pm CST November 5, 2008

HOUSTON -- President-elect Barack Obama was not the only big
Democratic winner on Election Day. Harris County, which
typically votes Republican, had a shift in power, KPRC Local
2 reported Wednesday.

Local Democrats went to the polls in greater numbers and showed
more discipline than ever before.

"They turned out more voters. The voters they turned out voted
faithfully straight ticket, and the Republicans didn't so much
turn out fewer voters, as that their rate of straight ticket
voting fell off," said political analyst Bob Stein, with
Rice University.

In some races, Stein said Republican voters did not support
Republican candidates.

For example, incumbent Harris County Sheriff Tommy Thomas lost
his reelection bid to Democrat and city councilman Adrian Garcia,
while other Republican candidates such as County Judge Ed Emmett won.
