Vice president, former AG, state senator indicted

McALLEN, Texas — A South Texas grand jury has indicted Vice President Dick Cheney and former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales on charges related to the alleged abuse of prisoners in Willacy County's federal detention centers.

The indictment criticizes Cheney's investment in the Vanguard Group, which holds interests in the private prison companies running the federal detention centers. It accuses Cheney of a conflict of interest and "at least misdemeanor assaults" on detainees by working through the prison companies.

Gonzales is accused of using his position while in office to stop an investigation into abuses at the federal detention centers.

Finally a jury and court with a set! Sweet!
:woohoo:

1. They just changed the article on AAS
The presiding judge has not signed the indictments! No yet at least.

The indictment, which had not yet been signed by the presiding judge, was one of seven released Tuesday in a county that has been a source of bizarre legal and political battles in recent years. Another of the indictments named a state senator on charges of profiting from his position.

(snip)
On Tuesday, Guerra said the indictments speak for themselves. He said the prison-related charges are a national issue and experts from across the country testified to the grand jury. Asked about the indictments against local players in the justice system who had pursued him, Guerra said, "the grand jury is the one that made those decisions, not me."

The indictments were first reported by KRGV-TV.

2. I know the lawyer who represented the family of one of the prisoners
in a wrongful-death action against GEO. Put up a hard fight to keep those bastards out of Webb County, but too many politicos stood to make $$ if they did, so yay, there's a federal pen on the border. :grr:

3. Yep - the prison industrial complex
And it's a growth industry, so they always make room for them. Sell it to the towns as good paying jobs. I agree with you that the protection money is probably paid to the politicos to let'em set up shop.

:grr:

4. Arraignment set for Cheney, Gonzales in Texas

Arraignment set for Cheney, Gonzales in Texas

By CHRISTOPHER SHERMAN, Associated Press Writer Christopher Sherman, Associated Press Writer

RAYMONDVILLE, Texas – A Texas judge has set a Friday arraignment for Vice President Dick Cheney, former U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and others named in indictments accusing them of responsibility for prisoner abuse in a federal detention center.

Cheney, Gonzales and the others will not be arrested, and do not need to appear in person at the arraignment, Presiding Judge Manuel Banales said.

(snip)
Some attorneys argued that Banales may not have the authority to schedule an arraignment because the indictments were invalid. One lawyer said Guerra never should have been allowed to present the cases to the grand jury because at least four of the indictments deal with people who had some role in the investigation of his office last year.

Indictments against Cheney, Gonzales dismissed
Dec 1st, 2008 | RAYMONDVILLE, Texas -- A judge in Texas has dismissed indictments against Vice President Dick Cheney and former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales.

Administrative Judge Manuel Banales ruled Monday that the indictments were improperly returned by a Willacy County grand jury.

The indictment against Cheney alleged that his personal investment in the Vanguard Group, which invests in private prison companies, made him culpable in alleged prisoner abuse at privately run federal detention centers.

Oh well it was fun dreaming even if it was only for a little while.

7. I can think of much more serious charges to haul those clowns up on.
Starting with treason and going on from there. My dream is to see them convicted here and then shipped to The Hague for even more charges.

8. I'm with you on the world criminal court
But you and I both know that won't happen. If we can't convict them in our own courts, the world will never get a chance to get their say either.
