Live blog from the State Board of Education hearings tonight!!!
Kathy Miller of Texas Freedom Network just sent an email. She along with parents, teachers, scientists, and other thinking people are waiting to testify at the Board tonight. I surely hope they kick some right-wing SBOE ass!

1. Sweet
Wonderful stuff. This is the kind of thing every lobby group that works for progressive causes should do. It's so sad that we have to fight the evolution fight again. It's no wonder this country has fallen so low worldwide in our aptitude for science. It's because of idiots like these State Board of Education members.

8:57 p.m. - Board member Ken Mercer suggests that the reason evolution deniers haven’t had their arguments published in respected, peer-reviewed scientific journals is because of censorship. We guess it can’t be because their arguments have no basis in science. Nah. Can’t be that.

Funny but not really considering how screwed up our state is.

2. One excerpt
The pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Shiner, TX just told the board to leave the religion to him and keep it out of the classroom. I think we can all raise a tall glass of Shiner Bock to that!

But if the fact that the State Board of Education is filled with fundamentalists and dominionists who think the Earth is less than 10,000 years old doesn't upset you enough, there's also this from Harvey Kronberg:

SBOE ALLOWS HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETES TO SUBSTITUTE ATHLETICS CLASSES FOR ACADEMIC ELECTIVES
The move heads off unintended consequences of new math and science requirements but others say the decision runs counter to spirit of state's "no pass, no play" policy.

Sometimes the State Board of Education’s bad policy choices – and by “bad,” we mean votes inconsistent with two decades of education reform in this state – aren’t always the fault of the State Board of Education.

Such was the case this afternoon, as the SBOE’s committee of the whole passed a jaw-dropping measure to elevate athletics to the same stature as curricular courses in the high school catalog and allow students the option to begin substituting athletic classes for virtually all academic elective course requirements.

State law forced the board to the vote. The combination of the 26 credits for the distinguished academic diploma and the impending 4x4 math and science requirements make it impossible for a student athlete to play four years of sports.

To meet new standards, the highest-achieving student athlete – or lowest-achieving, if it means TAKS remediation courses – must quit athletics to pick up the required two academic elective credits to meet diploma requirements.

But hey, it's not their fault they had to lower academic standards. State law made them do it.

:argh:

3. holy shit!
:wow:

Where the hell are the "business leaders" in this state? Ross Perot types are you out there? Do they really think that more athletes are what we need to move the Texas economy forward? Unbelievable! I would hope that the Texas Legislature takes some action to nullify that action.

I'll raise a toast to the pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Shiner. :toast:

4. Politics blog has the vote record on the stupid pass play
Politics blog 11/20/08
More credit coming for Texas high school sports
(snip)
Voting for the extra credits were: Craig, Gail Lowe, R-Lampasas, Patricia Hardy, R-Fort Worth, Cynthia Dunbar, R-Richmond, Barbara Cargill, R-The Woodlands, Ken Mercer, R-San Antonio, Lawrence Allen Jr., D-Houston, Rick Agosto, D-San Antonio and Rene Nunez, D-El paso.

Voting against the measure: Mavis Knight, D-Dallas, Miller, David Bradley, R-Beaumont, Leo, and Mary Helen Berlanga, D-Corpus Christi.

You know if any member voted with dumbass Cynthia Dunbar, they were on the wrong side of the vote.
