West Texas Hotel sued for discrimination

A West Texas hotel refused to give rooms to a family because they were African-American, according to a federal lawsuit filed today.

The discrimination happened June 19 at the Seminole Inn in Seminole, the lawsuit said. Seminole is southeast of Lubbock.

A woman and her boyfriend from Taylor were driving with relatives to a family reunion when they stopped to spend the night at the Seminole Inn where they had made reservations, said Gwenda Gault, one of the plaintiffs in the lawsuit. A man who was the owner of the hotel and was outside gardening came up to the family’s van and screamed racial slurs at them, Gault said.

Kenneth Gibson, who is Gault's fiancee and also a plaintiff in the lawsuit, said the man, speaking of African Americans, said, "All you do is bring in drugs and alcohol." The man, who is not identified in the lawsuit, also told the people in the van that "Michael Jordan needed to buy a farm where they could stay," Gibson said.

Suit: Black family refused from hotel
(snip)
Gwenda Gault made the reservation for the hotel rooms and said the family of 11 drove eight hours from Central Texas to Seminole. Gault said the manager needs to change his ways.

"I can't believe they did this to us," said Gault. "We want to stand up to this kind of racism and let them know it's unacceptable."

Good for the Gault family for taking this action. This is not acceptable!

Oh and all those right wingers continue to say that discrimination in Texas is a thing of the past. Texas doesn't need any special laws to protect minorities from racial discrimination. Shameful! In some parts of Texas nothing has changed in over 50 years.

1. The local nickname for Seminole is
Semi-Hole.

I'll bet you can guess why.

3. Just one correction - Seminole is in the Panhandle, not
West Texas. Odessa and other cities in the area have enough water to carry without this...
