Hinojosa Could Leave Congress To Become Ambassador To Mexico; State Rep. Martinez Could Seek His Seat

Congressman Ruben Hinojosa (D-Mercedes) could resign from Congress as early as this summer to become President Barack Obama’s ambassador to Mexico, sources tell Capitol Annex.

Hinojosa, the chair of the House Subcommittee on Higher Education. Lifelong Learning, and Competitiveness, was touted by the Congressional Hispanic Caucus as a possibility for Secretary of Education back in December, has served in Congress since 1997. He succeeded Kika de la Garza. The Congressional Hispanic Caucus is reportedly touting Hinojosa for the new post as well.

If selected, Hinojosa would succeed another Texan, Tony Garza. Garza’s tenure as Ambassador to Medico ended on January 20.

Interesting. Lots of people looking to run for that Congressional seat if it becomes available.

2. Another appointment too - Shiela Jackson Lee from Houston
Kicking off another round of "competition" in Houston

Capitol Annex 2/10/09
Texas Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Houston) will leave her post in Congress to work in the U.S. State Department under Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton

Jackson Lee was among Clinton’s most prominent African American supporters until the final days of her presidential campaign, in spite of the fact that her Congressional District overwhelmingly supported Barack Oabama. Jackson Lee made no apologies for her support of Clinton, although it could have caused her difficulties in the Democratic Primary next year.

(snip)
Speculation on who will replace Jackson Lee is already beginning. Leading the pack among likely contenders is State Sen. Rodney Ellis (D-Houston). Former Houston City Councilwoman Ada Edwards is also a likely contender for the post. There is some speculation that former Texas House Speaker Pro Tem Sylvester Turner (D-Houston) will seek the seat now that he is essentially exiled within the House Chamber.

(snip)
A special election will likely be called for the seat by Texas Governor Rick Perry sometime after Jackson Lee’s resignation is official.

3. Hee hee
she's avoiding the ass-kicking that was coming her way in 2010. Good move.

4. Plus she gets to work with her pal Hillary
I bet ya Hillary gave her a hand up the ladder. Shiela still gets to be in D.C. and it probably means a better life. None of those damn pesky votes in Congress.

Not that there is anything wrong with that.
