Austin protests craven, idiotic endorsement of *

At least 300 Austinites, furious about the Austin American-Statesman's endorsement of President Bush for a second term, gathered on the Congress Avenue bridge Sunday to protest.

The editorial gave Bush a cautious endorsement in Sunday's editions, in a long piece in the Insight section.

"I thought it was very interesting to read, because it reads like an endorsement of Kerry," said Sarah Bird, who wore a shirt that read, "Kiss Bush Goodbye!" "They just put the wrong name on it."

According to protesters, efforts to organize the opposition through e-mails and telephone calls began shortly after the Statesman posted the editorial on its Web site at 6 p.m. Saturday.

Who writes the editorials? Maybe an editor wrote a Kerry endorsement originally, and was forced by his employer to change the name in it? And they didn't bother to change the rest "because all those politicians say the same stuff anyway"? :P

2. Sounds Like The Same Endorsement The Cols Dispatch Used
The CD is such an utter piece of crap anyway, it was no surprise they endorsed Bush. But their logic was infalliably ridiculous: Bush sure has screwed everything up but Kerry is a flip-flopper.

"Since * took office, this newspaper repeatedly has criticized his administration’s borrow-and-spend fiscal policies, which have resulted in massive deficits that weaken America.

The Dispatch also strongly opposed the invasion of Iraq, contending the case had not been made that Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction or posed an imminent threat to this nation."

3. Mine was downright scathing
(snip)
Protesters inked their anger toward the newspaper on a variety of signs, from one that proclaimed simply "The Austin community emphatically rejects the local daily's endorsement of George W. Bush," to the creative "A.A.S.-inine," to the downright scathing "I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore! I want my country back! I want my state back! Fire Bush & Oppel."
(/snip)

That was actually the back of my sign, the front had Statesman's front page stories for a week and TRASH written over it.

A freind of mine wrote the Austin Spaceman this zinger:

The Statesman Is Insane
Albert Einstein once defined insanity as "doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." Your paper's endorsement of the unelected Bush ends with, "we ask that the president return our faith by acknowledging his failures and acting to correct them." He has repeatedly refused to do this, so I must conclude that you are insane. Thanks for the fish wrappers.

6. And she is also very active FSC
I see her at all kinds of events. We also had one person with a wonderful costume. Unfortunately didn't have my camera, I had been out leafleting right before the protest. Anyway the costume was a guy dressed in a wonderful long sequin dress with cowboy boots and a bush face mask. He also had a tiara on and a sash across his dress with the words "Mis Leader". Great Halloween costume idea.

I hope someone has that picture out there.

7. Buy some of her books.
They've just been re-released; I forget which label.

"Alamo House, or Women Without Me, Men Without Brains"
and
"The Boyfriend School"

are two of my favorite books of all time. They're especially great because they're set in the Austin I used to love (mid 80s, close to my heart Austin).

I'd like to see that pic too!
