Cleburne Times-Comments on Repub *Silliness*/Arlene Wolgemuth |
|
http://www.cleburnetimesreview.com/articles/2004/04/15/columnists/guest_columnists/guest05.txt*Maybe the surest sign that the Bush II people are worried is that Karen Hughes is riding back into town (D.C., that is). Every administration needs its designated grown-up; Reagan had Howard Baker, Bush I had James Baker, and Clinton had David Gergen. Presidents these days seem to need someone, whatever their official title, to keep them focused, almost like a kind of living presidential Ritalin. *

"I have to give credit to Arlene Wohlgemuth; not many people would have the sheer brass monkeys to stand up at a recent candidate forum and actually defend her vote against death benefits for the widows and orphans of police officers killed in the line of duty. Of course, most people would've had the decency and common sense to have supported the proposal in the first place. There's already a federal program in place, she said.
That's not true, but you've still got to give the lady points for gall. The way Mrs. Wohlgemuth claims to be pro-law enforcement when she votes against cops would fit in well with the Bush II administration, which claims to be pro-military but consistently guts military benefits, tries to shut down VA hospitals and so forth. To be fair, though, Dot Snyder had her own moment of silliness recently. She admitted to having been a board member for Planned Parenthood, but then tried to crab-walk by saying she quit as soon as she heard they were involved with abortions. Say what? You mean to tell me this obviously intelligent woman had never seen the words "Planned Parenthood" and "abortion" together in the same sentence before she served on the group's board of directors? Did she skip that part of orientation?
Frankly, this is just another sign that the Snyder campaign has thrown a shoe. They don't seem to understand that all the endorsements in the world won't help you if those are the only people who vote for you. On the other hand, maybe she'll catch a break. Tom DeLay has quietly put out the word that he'll resign as majority leader if he gets indicted in the campaign fund-raising scandal being investigated by a grand jury in Austin. So you have to assume that if Mrs. Wohlgemuth (who has also been subpoenaed) is indicted, she'll likewise step aside. For the good of the party and all that."
Funny, last time I went through Cleburne I didn't see many bolsheviks!
