Young mother of 3, with cancer, needs your help.
http://bayareahouston.blogspot.com/2009/07/young-mother-of-3-with-cancer-needs.html

Kelly Luther is 28, lives in a small Texas town called Alvin. She is a single mom with 3 young kids and she has cervical cancer. Prior to discovery of her cancer she purchased a health insurance policy for her family. Unfortunately she cannot afford the $6000 deductible that Clear Lake Hospital has demanded. (read her story in the Alvin Sun here)

I have talked with her and confirmed her bank account information. I dont know her, but I was in Alvin and read about her in the paper. It just shows why we need health care reform.

2. Jah Damn it. Yanno I travel these small TX tons outside Houston (Alvin among them) and
there isn't ONE that's not having fundraisers for MULTIPLE sick citizens -- parents, children, from transplants to neuroblastomas. This is an abomination.

3. John did you get my mail about this?
I lost your addy when my computer crashed. I saw this on your blog Wednesday, so I sent you a message Wednesday night, through the DU mail site. It has some important info about possible grant money many of the hospitals owe and don't always tell you is available. CL may or may not fall into this, but certainly one of the area hospitals will. If she needs to go to CL she can go to one of the other hospitals and get $6K in preliminary tests and labs done to get her deductible paid up and then go to CL for the rest of the treatment.

You can wiki "Hill-Burton Act". I worked with legal services on this back in the 70's, when we fought the hospitals for access.

If you didn't get it, e-mail your addy to m.porter -at- earthlink.net and I'll resend it.

9. M.D. Anderson Hospital might be an option.
It would be a drive from Alvin, but they might work out a deal with her. They are non-profit and receive money from Texas. It has been a while, but last I heard, Texas residents take priority re: funding from our state. They are a top-notch hospital and give excellent care.

It is truly ashame that this woman has to go through fighting with hospitals and insurance. In any other civilized country, she would have already had her surgery and could be using her energy and focus on healing and getting well. Hopefully, some day, we will be there.

I saw this item make the rounds on the Whitmarsh list. He's got 8,000 on that. Hopefully that will help.
