I'm Tired of the South Bashing!
No more money from my household to this site.

Why should we waste our money?

We have a hard enough fight here at home.

Is there another site that supports us instead of kicks us in the teeth every fucking day?

I really hate to leave DU because I like the Lounge but I just sick of the Hate.

1. Not to mention
the gay bashing, baiting, and general homophobia that gets disappeared, and the perps that remain on the board.
http://tinyurl.com/possibly-of-interest

(And if you know of a better progressive site that has a good level of activity and the same threaded replies that DU has, I'd love to hear of it.)

8. Actually, I didn't mean *just* the threaded replies -
I like the way you can skim the subjects, how fast it loads, the search function - well, just about everything except the bashing and baiting with impunity (if you're the right poster).

2. Burnt Orange Report
There are several other Texas based boards that you could post in. However most of them don't have a "lounge".

4. Okay, this is what I don't get
I never hear about the Civil War outside of history classes EXCEPT on DU. I've never once heard someone call it the "War of Northern Aggression" or say "the South shall rise again." The ONLY time I ever hear those phrases are on DU. And I've lived in Texas my whole life.

5. I agree. Not a penny more to this hate site.
Edited on Sat Sep-19-09 04:42 PM by Lady Effingbroke
I donated a very, very minimal amount in order to have access to board functions allowed only to donors, but access to these functions is not necessary and I won't be donating again.

Unless you live in the high holy blue states of the NORTHeast or NORTHwest, you face a daily onslaught of derision, ridicule, mockery, and contempt simply for where you live.

I have lived in TX for 33 years and in all that time have NEVER discussed the Civil War with anyone outside of history class.

Conclusion: these sad, bitter, hate-filled, self-loathing people are no better than the "Rethugs" they claim to so despise.

So much for "liberal tolerance". :eyes:

9. It is getting monotonous, isn't it? I thought DU would be a great place...
to network and form a state-by-state strategy in order to further our Democratic platform, but I too am surprised at the intolerance displayed. However, I still think we Texans should continue to post our strategy to turn Texas blue, with or without the help of some of the others.

10. One of the main reasons I keep my nose in Texas DU forum
We're at least doing some good in this forum. Putting out information and making contacts that can turn into real "face to face" friends.

The main DU forums are like the world, no matter what, there are going to be some bad apples.

I frankly I don't think we have the resources/bandwidth to deal with every hate thread. The best we can do is alert on the real vitriolic ones that really spew extra hate.

You have the power to hit ignore on threads and posters that really bother you too.

Just like we don't want the rest of the states to give up on Texas, we shouldn't give up on DU because of a few arrogant posters. Remember this board has about 145,000 users. And the assholes aren't even 1/2 of 1% of that.

They just have a microphone here on DU because it sells - a lot like Faux News. Some like the sensationalism, the fight and the almost instantaneous "greatest page" reward. Like I've said before - it's lame. Takes no effort whatsoever to make a fuck Texas post get to the greatest page.

12. >>The main DU forums are like the world, no matter what, there are going to be some bad apples.
It's not just that. I don't know about anyone else, but I'm not talking about posters, primarily - I'm talking about the owners. And, yes, I know it's all supposed to be handled with PM's and alerts to admins and mods, only, hush-hush, per the rules. That's another of my problems with this place - the secrecy and the evidence-disappearing.

Some people can get away with anything, repeatedly, and some get TS'd on a dime. And the evidence that the TS'ing was brought on by baiting or that some TS'ing was for virtually no reason except pique or panic or something, gets disappeared. And god help you if you talk about it, unless it's grave dancing, which seems to be perfectly OK.

My link above has some background on an incident (actually it happened in two parts, but I don't think anyone has documented the second part as of yet) that I personally witnessed. There's lots of documentation out there (try "DU Gay Purge") - I just picked one source to link to. I've also witnessed smaller incidents and evidence-disappearing of the same sort subsequently. I basically come here for news and maybe to throw in a few comments, never really noticed personalities or remembered user names unless my nose was rubbed in it, so if *I* noticed you've got to figure it was blatant.

If this one gets *me* TS'd, I can't complain. If it gets disappeared as well or instead - well, that's about par for the course. The owners can do whatever they want, sure, but the site wouldn't *be* a site without the customers who donate words and money........

I can't say I have noticed as much as you have about the level of this.

I can say I do notice certain posters who I do remember as being real haters. And I will hit alert on them when they pipe up with their hate spew.

You know you can always send a private message to EarlG, or Skinner. Can't see that should be you banned. You're doing it off board when you send them a private message.

You pay your dues you should be able to ask questions.

Bwaaaaaaaaah! :spew:

Oh, *that's* been done, by plenty of people, on the subject I'm talking about. When I said I had a problem with the owners, that's exactly what I meant.

Edited to add:

If you haven't checked out my link above, and you want to, you might want to hurry before it (and I) are disappeared.

15. I did - I checked Pam's House Blend post
But like I said before I am not familiar with that purging or any of the related circumstances.

I believe you. I'm not doubting the events.

And certainly if I were aware of that happening personally and nothing be done to correct that, then I agree with you it might be time to leave DU.

You get what you put in to a community and if the community is not being built the way you like it, there is always the option to leave.

I have to say for myself, other than the Texas forum, I spend much more time on DailyKos - but they have the same Texas bashing problem too.

23. Woh
I had been putting off checking this, as I am very timid and have a thin skin (wish I didn't, but that's the way it is.....)

I can't believe this entire thread has not been disappeared.

Bashing of any group, qua group, is to be questioned.

If it's of something that is not hurting anyone else (as gays are not), it is to be abhorred.

I must learn to grow a thicker skin, and check back in a more timely manner.....!

All bashed groups have a lot in common.

First they came for......

17. I agree, and I'm not giving up...
If some don't like what I post, then they can hit the scroll button. I tell you, it's the darndest thing I've ever seen. I have always participated in the voting process, but this is the first time that I've tried to really get involved in politics in order to try to make a substantial difference. To see so much intolerance displayed by my fellow Dems is kinda surprising. I know we have differences of opinion and we all are not monolithic, but I didn't think these differences would get in the way of our Democratic platform. We could really be a force if we could use this forum better. Even though there are some who are more centrist or left than others, we are basically fighting for the same changes and/or rights. But anyway, I'm on a mission to help get HCR passed and other issues I feel are important to our country, and to help turn Texas blue:)

Also, just fyi, Dallas has a progressive radio station at 1360 a.m. It's really new, and our progressive talk shows aren't that great (at least not to me), but feel free to listen on-line when you get a chance. They interviewed Friedman and Scheifer a while back but I missed it. Today they interviewed the Libertarian candidate (Steve Nichols). Hopefully, they'll interview Hank at a later date.

11. Sorry to hear that
We try what we can in the Mod Forum to help with this, but we do depend on people like you to help us out with alerts. I personally think the Texas Forum here is one of the best forums on DU. I also want you to know that I tend to take any stereotypical criticism of Texas here very seriously and do what I can to help out in the main forums above. If you want, feel free to contact me directly (after you hit alert though). I will warn you though that my own time is not as abundant as it once was so it may be a bit before I can raise up things internally.

16. Thanks Lithos
but I wish more mods were as quick on the trigger to pull (and yes, TS) some of the very egregious posts & posters out there. There is one poster who bashes the South & Texas every chance he gets, yet so far as I can tell, he has yet to be suspended, much less get the granite cookie he so richly deserves.

21. FWIW, I moved here recently from a blue state and I have to say...
never have I met more welcoming people. Yes, I have met some won't-be-changed-freaking-out-over-Obama conservatives, but I have also met some great progressives and also some willing to listen and debate. Coming from Detroit, I will say that Houston appears to be very forward minded.

even though extreme change (temps, no hubby to hug etc.) can be difficult, Texans have made me feel welcome. And, I'm here to help turn this terrific place blue again.
