FBI: Man Arrested Trying To Bomb Dallas Building

The FBI says it has arrested a Jordanian citizen for trying to bomb a Dallas skyscraper.

As we were first to report here on CBS11TV.com, 19-year-old Hosam Maher Husein Smadi was arrested Thursday afternoon.

The FBI says agents arrested Smadi after he placed what he thought was a bomb at the base of Fountain Place, a 60-story skyscraper located at 1445 Ross Avenue in downtown Dallas.

The FBI says undercover agents found out about Smadi's intent to commit violent attacks in Dallas. The FBI says agents tried to get him to change his mind about committing the attacks, but were unsuccessful.

Undercover agents met with Smadi several times, they say, posing as a sleeper Al Qaeda cell. During one of those meetings, agents say Smadi decided to place a car bomb at the base of Fountain Place.

The story seems to suggest the FBI used entrapment and may have even provided the bomb. :shrug:

the tried to talk him out of it, could not do so, and therefore gave him a fake bomb in order to arrest him before he actually did anything.

It is still entrapment if he was just talking disgruntled garbage and they suggested something this (potentially) destructive.

I have no reason to trust the FBI on this either but their story sounds OK so far.

Will this guy even get a real lawyer? Then we may find out. But it is a matter of national security :)

But they said they tried to talk him out of placing it.

No doubt that actions by some of the intelligence agencies can be viewed suspiciously. This time they may have simply done their job.

I hope their case is airtight - I cannot imagine that it isn't. As someone who works on Ross Avenue in a high-rise and thinks of 9-11 everytime a Southwest jet passes the building, I am very glad this guy is off the streets.
