Texas Results Recap
Hubert Vo won a Texas House seat, defeating Talmadge Heflin, a 22-year incumbent and chairman of the Appropriations Committee.

Lloyd Doggett and Chet Edwards overcame their gerrymandered districts and won reelection to Congress.

Dallas elected Lupe Valdez, a lesbian and former migrant worker, as sheriff.

In Austin, Mark Strama took a Texas House seat back from a Republican tied to Tom Delay, and Democrats maintained a hold on all of the civil district court benches.

So was this a bitter loss? You bet it was. But after allowing yourself whatever time you need to grieve, please resolve to get back out there. In many parts of Texas, local elections will be coming up in 2005, then we start gearing up for statewide elections in 2006. Texas needs you. Our country needs you.

1. Texas has historically been
a one-party state. The party in power has been whichever one is most racist at any given point in history. The homophobia is a new issue which wasn't politicized during the segregationist Democrats' glory days of Jim Crow rule.

3. Charlie Stenholm got screwed in the gerrymandered Dist. 19
and so did the people of District 19.
A ton of seniority, a B.S. in agriculture and a masters degree in agriculture, ranking member of the House Agriculture Committee (in a district that's largely agricultural)...
and he gets run out by Randy Nougatbooger, a flippin' banker who ran ad after ad saying nothing about any qualifications whatsoever...just "good Christian values" and "friend of dubya".
Another DeLay tragedy. :(
