What color is Kroger?
Since I've stopped shopping at Wal-Mart, I've been doing most of my shopping at Kroger. Are they blue? If not, who around here (Pearland/Alvin)is? Good grief, we got to eat, and I'm on a tight budget here, but I don't want to feed the machine!

1. Red, sadly.
My grandfather used to be a big-wig for them (in the 1930s).

18. Here are some Costcos in Houston for special trips...
Katy Frwy at Bunker Hill
1150 Bunkerhill Rd
Houston, Texas
77055

Willowbrook
12405 N. Gessner Rd.
Houston, Texas
77064

I know...they're not super close by, but we're all learning how to modify our shopping habits a bit to buy less red. Buy at Kroger during the week of there's something you really need, but when you want to stock up on meats, toilet paper, big bottles of juice, etc...go to Costco.

19. That's WAAAAY far from me
I'm in Pearland/Alvin area.

I use as little gas as possible, no way I'm driving to Katy or Willowbrook for shopping. That would be an all day event.

20. I chuckled when I saw that........commuting from Alvin
Not to mention you'd have to really schedule to get back home with the perishable items, espeicially in the Houston heat. No stopping for dinner and a movie. Plus, Costco closes early, like 7pm some nights. I believe it was a Saturday that we stopped and they were just closing.

BTW, the one at Katy & Bunker Hill isn't in Katy. It's actually in Houston, on the Katy, about 3 miles west of the interchange of the Katy and the West Loop.

I'm not that far from it, but as far as traffic etc. it just is much too inconvenient to buy a membership. I've never understood why they located where they did, though with some other stores going in in the last couple of years, it's a bit better location. The problem is, the other stores are Best Buy, Lowes and Michaels and they're all over town, so not many people have to deal with that area and Old Katy Rd. Plus like I said, if they kept the same hours as those stores it would help, too, since you can't go buy your groceries first and then take your time at the other stores.

If they would open more stores that would be great, but with only the two, in all of Houston, I keep expecting them to pull out of the market.

21. It was just a suggestion....
My mom, as a former Air Force wife, had to make special trips when they closed all the Air Force bases in Austin.

Once every few months, she'd drive down to San Antonio (100 miles or so) with an ice chest in the back of her car, and stock up at the commisary and BX at Randolph AFB.

Texas is a big state, people do lots of crazy things without even thinking of distance sometimes.

We're neighbors! I live next to Pearland, right off of Bltwy 8! :hi:
Edit: Can't help you with the grocery store inquiry. Very red store-wise around here. Not even a CostCo.

5. I shop Krogers..............
Edited on Sun Dec-26-04 03:22 PM by merci_me
because when we came down here 20 years ago, they were the only union grocery around. All the others fought off any union and Krogers was very cool with having union workers and those unions are usually supporting Democrats with their dollars.

Also, when I lived in Cincinnati in the '60s they were the only major supermarket that would open stores in the poor intercity neighborhoods. When some others started to, they would charge higher prices at their intercity stores, while Krogers ran the same ad circulars citywide.

I haven't been involved with the food caravan for several years, but Krogers was the first large supermarket in Houston, to let volunteers pickup bakery and produce for the shelters.

For or corporation, based in a very Repug Cincinnati, I guess they could be worse.

Co-ops-

Buying clubs-
How Can I Find One Near Me?

Look for one listed on the Coop Directory. If you can’t find one near you, then contact your regional Coop Distributor and ask them if they can give you information about a buying club in your area. Sometimes they will take your name and pass it on to the local buying clubs who may elect to contact you.

11. Kroger is a big donor to the Repugs.
I'm in Portland, and a few years back Kroger bought Fred Meyer, a huge local grocery store/variety store conglomerate. I think they are only in Oregon and SW Washington.

Anyway, they did a complete restructure and threw out people who had worked 10, 20, 30 years for Fred Meyer with a small severance and a "good-bye". They've caused a lot of hard feelings here in Portland. I will not give them 1 cent of my money.

Question for Oregonians: what about Winco? I know about Costco, but I do most of my shopping at Winco.

14. I go to local grocery stores
no chains. I know the folks who own the stores and know their political leanings. The other benefit is that, since I know the folks, I can talk to them and let them know what is going on.

15. We have ONE locally owned grocery store in Alvin
I've driven past it a million times, never stopped. I'm thinking that they are likely red, the blues around here (business-wise anyway) are rare.

16. you may be surprised
the little guys like independent grocers, sometimes are willing to listen to progressive ideas. It's all in your approach to them. And I guarantee if you go in and say, "I like to support local businesses because they have a real interest in our town" you'll have someone who is willing and even eager to listen to what you say.

17. Krogers are unionized...
All the Krogers I know are unionized up here in the DFW area. I happen to like the idea that they are also one of the few places that openly hire people with mental handicaps.

If you're shopping in stores that are unionized, then you're going to increase the likelihood of more union jobs and more union dues that will be donated to the Dems.
