Republican activist indicted for shooting at workers

A longtime Republican Party activist charged with shooting at workers whom she claims "butchered" trees at her Woodway home was indicted Wednesday.

Carolyn Payne Lomax, 63, was indicted on two counts of aggravated assault in a January 2004 incident in which she reportedly fired at workers for Asplundh Co. who were trimming trees around utility lines for utility company Oncor.

Lomax has said she fired the shots to get the workers off her property after repeatedly telling them to stop their work and to call a supervisor. She said no one from the company contacted her before they started trimming the trees. On previous occasions, a supervisor had come to her property and overseen the cutting when asked, she said.

This time, Lomax said, the workers appeared to be mocking her in Spanish. After repeated pleas, she said she went inside, grabbed a .22-caliber pistol from a desk drawer and headed back outside.

I'm in heavily forested NW Harris County and over-zealous tree trimming (and felling) burns me up. We moved out there BECAUSE of the trees. Plus the guys were just doing their job.
