Mariners to Melvin: You're Fired

SEATTLE -- The Seattle Mariners fired manager Bob Melvin after two seasons Monday, one day after the team lost its 99th game.

Melvin was told of the decision during a morning meeting at Safeco Field, and general manager Bill Bavasi called a news conference for 11:30 a.m. (PDT).

Melvin didn't immediately return telephone messages.

In May, the Mariners exercised the option on Melvin's contract for 2005 despite a 9-16 start. He led the team to a 93-69 record in 2003, his first season, after Lou Piniella left for Tampa Bay.

2. Well, this is too bad. I liked him.
Also, he was very easy on the eyes, especially after Lou Piniella. I started really disliking Piniellia after a woman reporter asked him a question about the pitch count a few years ago, and his utterly classless response was, "What do YOU know about the pitch count, young lady???" Ouch. Bob Melvin would never do that; also, it wasn't his fault the Mariners weren't doing well. Management is cheap, made dumb trades over the years, hung on to players like Wilson and Martinez too long, and won't pay position players like Cameron.

3. I liked Melvin
But I can't say I'm surprised by this decision.

4. Maybe Larry Bowa will replace him
I've always liked him since he played for the Phillies back in the 70's. They just let him go as manager so he's available. He did a great job for Lou here in the past. He knows the team and he has a little of Lou's style.
