1. No winner yet.
At one point 32 votes separated them with Democrat Gregoire on top. With nearly 1.9 million votes tallied by early Wednesday, Republican Rossi led by 1,064.
"This could take another week" as hundreds of thousands of absentee and provisional ballots are counted, Rossi told supporters in Bellevue. http://www.komotv.com/stories/33781.htm

Still alot of votes left out there, but I'm feeling better about my homestate--We got both Legislative houses and probably a governor--AND WE VOTED FOR THE SMART GUY FOR PRESIDENT!!!!

It was fun to listen to local talk radio this morning--they were hammering on Vance and the poor job he did for the GOP here.

BWAHAHAHA!

12. The Eastside isn't a lost cause
The Eastside is anchored with the 41st and 48th LDs, both of which have D's in the Assembly. We in the Mercer Island-centric 41st just kicked out State Sen. Horn. Moreover, we defeated both R55 and one of its champions, Fawn Spady (boycott Dick's!).

True, the 8th CD elected Reichert over Dave Ross, but you can attribute that to him putting away Ridgway. I predict he'll stumble mightily and will be vulnerable in two years.

Economic/taxation issues framed properly as "investments in trade infrastructure" will sell over here, but we may need to reach out more creatively to address conservation/preservation concern - "property rights" issues are hot in the rural parts of King Co.

"Values" are indeed important - lots of non-demoninational churches.

There's about 360,000 left. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Slade Gorton lost in 2000 after the absentee ballots were counted.

If Rossi wins he won't be able to do much. The Democrats control both houses of the legislature.

Check the results thread.

Unfortunately, as close as it is, this one will be a mandatory recount. Unless the shitheads can pull a fast one, the number should hold up, but it may not be certified for a while :(

Getting VERY VERY close now-- plenty of votes left to count (Nearly 200,000, as of noon today) One Fourth of to them come King county---tomorrow at 4:00 PM. By then, we should have a pretty clear look at who can claim victory, and who will call for a recount. This one will go until Thanksgiving, it looks like...

26. I swear kurtyboy
If Snohomish County doesn't break for Gregoire...I haven't checked recently but it went for rossi before these votes will be counted.

Door knocked, and my husband phone called, for Hans Dunshee and it was great. We love him. He is just so responsive. He really gets what it means to represent all of his District.

We are thrilled Hans and Larsen and Murray were re-elected. We plan to be at his victory party this Friday.

Jax...hoping for Gregoire to pull this out.

I ran, county by county, projections based upon current county percentages/candidate and remaining ballots to count, as of 5:09 PM.

The numbers aren't there for Gregoire if county-by-county trends continue.

PROJECTION:
Gregoire 1360727 48.87%
Rossi 1362976 48.95%
Bennett 60643 2.18%

Note that those are exactly the percentages that are held statewide right now--in other words, the remaining ballots seem to be proportionate to what's been counted so far, even when county preferences are taken into account. BUT! You can never tell when the margin is less than one-eighth of a percent.

28. Rossi maintaining narrow, but formidible, lead
Christine Gregoire Democrat 1318496 48.84%
Dino Rossi Republican 1321372 48.95%
Ruth Bennett Libertarian 59382 2.20%

Results last updated on: 11/10/2004 4:44:00 PM

I ran my county-by-county projection again--not much change, even with 25,000 left to count in King Co.

PROJECTION--
Gregiore 1360951 48.85%
Rossi 1363920 48.95%
Bennett 61294 2.20%

The interesting part may now be just how close to the 2000 vote threshold they end this thing. If it is 2006 votes, will Gregoire ask a judge to intervene and force a recount? This additional requirement was only added to the .5% requirement AFTER the last election where Gorton and Cantwell slugged it out over a narrow margin--but more than 2000 votes. I've held that only the percentage requirement should be enforced, because if there is an error in counting, it is just as likely to be magnified in a race with 2,000,000 votes as one with 5,000. We shall see....

Gregoire 1367329 48.87%
Rossi 1368210 48.91%
Bennett 62135 2.22%

Less than 900 vote difference, certain manual recount.

30. It's only 158 votes apart now, Gregoire leading
Christine Gregoire Democrat 1360871 48.88%
Dino Rossi Republican 1360713 48.87%
Ruth Bennett Libertarian 62439 2.24%

Results last updated on: 11/15/2004 5:59:00 PM

Of the remaining votes, Chris and Dino should essentially split 'em down the middle.

Chris has 9475 votes left to count in counties she's VERY strong in (Cowlitz, Jefferson, King, Pacific, San Juan, Thurston, Whatcom).

Dino has 12191 votes left to count in remaining counties--he's MODERATELY strong in these (however these remaining ballots are largely provisional ballots, which somewhat favor Chris).

In any event, projecting existing trends against remaining votes gives us a virtual tie---

Gregoire 1371462 48.88%
Rossi 1371302 48.88%
Bennett 62925 2.24%

Gregoire wins by 160 in this scenario--and the recount is assured.

Has a recount ever turned an election in Washington?

NO.

But!

they have swung NET vote totals in excess of this margin--by as many as 604 votes in the 1968 Attorney General race.

Check out the thread in LBN about Grays Harbor County, including the link to the KOMO TV story about it, and the judicial ruling tonight (Like an hour ago) that King County will have to count the provisionals that the GOP was trying to supress!!!

The Vote count was as close as 20 a few minutes ago, but Rossi leads by 600 right now--it will swing the other way later tonight....

36. What "Voter Fraud" Means in ReSmuglican
Chris Vance was harumphing all over the TV last night about "voter fraud." And what was his big problem? King County had underestimated the number of uncounted ballots remaining. When they released the larger and more accurate number, Vance had a li'l aneurysm.

"Voter fraud" in ReSmug apparently means that all votes actually get counted.

I oughtta come up with an ReSmug-to-English dictionary one of these days.

35. King County increases estimate of ballots left to count
from 1000 to 1450. This change was made on the Secretary of State's web site this morning (November 17). These are probably the new affidavits that the Democrats delivered to King County on Monday and Tuesday.
