Stifling free speech stifles education
"The university experience should be about exploring new ideas," state Rep. Scott Suder said in a press release last week.
Hard to argue with that. But to Suder, there's ideas and then there's ideas.
The ideas the Abbotsford Republican presumably wants people to hear are, well, those he shares and only those he shares.
Back in February, Suder co-sponsored a resolution condemning the speech of Colorado professor Ward Churchill at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, saying Churchill's criticism of American foreign policy was "clearly inflammatory, offensive, and lacking in academic foundation, rightly outraging citizens both in Wisconsin and across the country."
Today, he's going after Jane Fonda and a former member of the British Parliament, George Galloway, both of whom are scheduled to speak Sept. 18 at the Wisconsin Union Theater in Madison.
And he doesn't like one thing that he thinks the two Iraq war critics are going to say. Allow Suder to continue the quote that opened this discussion: "The university experience should be about exploring new ideas, not having hate of your own country being shoved down your throat by university professors."
"Given that this hate-fest is being sponsored by a UW department, it's no wonder conservative views are not welcome on the Madison campus," Suder said. ...
