Instead of raising the maximum speed limit from 65 mph to 75 mph on Wisconsin's freeways and expressways - as some lawmakers proposed in July - maybe we ought to lower it back to 55 mph.

That's exactly what state Rep. Marlin Schneider of Wisconsin Rapids plans to introduce in the Assembly.
He is likely to face opposition from all corners of the state - and probably some outright guffaws. The trucking industry, roadside convenience stores, the tourism lobby and other business interests will never go for it.

"Go back to 55? Is he kidding? Hah!"
Yes, it's almost as funny as throwing $235 million out of our pockets every year as we drive around Wisconsin.
