Oshkosh heroes: Two died in Iraq war in '05

Five from area died in service
By Doug Zellmer
of The Northwestern

The war in Iraq did not spare Oshkosh in 2005. It hit home and hard.

Killed last year were Oshkosh residents Sgt. Andrew Wallace, 25, who served in the Wisconsin Army National Guard and Benjamin Jansky, 28, a member of the U.S. Army Reserves.

Their deaths are among the more than 2,000 military personnel, who have died in the war in Iraq, which has churned national and international debate on whether the United States should stay the course or send the troops home.

Opinions differ on war

The war in Iraq has sparked debate nationally by Cindy Sheehan — an anti-war advocate whose son was killed in Iraq — who has differing opinions on the war than President Bush. It has also fueled anti-war sentiments right here in Oshkosh with protests on Monument Square. The Oshkosh Common Council will decide this month to allow a referendum in April for troop withdrawal.

Oshkosh resident Robert Poole Jr. said it's time to get out of the war in Iraq.

"Our government misled people on the reasons to go over there," Poole said. "They were saying there were weapons of mass destruction. They've found nothing."

Poole said those who support withdrawal of American troops look like cowards to some, but he sees it differently.

"I believe the people who are asking for the troops to come back home are supporting the troops in the highest possible way," Poole said. "We don't want another soldier dying in an unjust war. The anti-war position is in fact the most supportive of the troops because we want them home and out of harms way."
