Kohl's response to my request that he oppose Alito |
|
Edited on Tue Jan-10-06 08:55 PM by undeterred
... I look forward to the Supreme Court nomination hearings, currently scheduled to begin on January 9, 2006, as an opportunity to closely review Judge Alito's qualifications and judicial philosophy, as well as his views on important issues. As we embark upon this confirmation process it is critical for Judge Alito to be forthright and candid with the American people. Nominees to the Supreme Court should be able and willing to state their understanding and approach to the law. I view these hearings seriously, and as essential to considering a nominee to our highest court. I plan to reconvene the bipartisan task force, made up of 11 legal experts and community leaders from Wisconsin, to examine the nominee and provide my office with advice and counsel during this process. You can be certain that I will keep your views in mind as the nomination process moves forward. Again, thank you for contacting me.
To me this sounds just as vague and evasive as Alito does...

5. I think he really couldn't say much directly. |
|
It's not good form for a Senator to say "yeah he sucks I'm going to oppose him" before the hearings have even begun. Alito does have the right to a fair hearing.
(Perhaps Kohl could have been a little more in the "I hope my concerns are alleviated" direction -- that way, he sounds like he's being prudent rather than obstructionist.)
Not that I think Kohl's going to do great things with this nomination, but...
