My LTTE in today's Journal Sentinel
The Abramoff scandal answers many questions about our nation today and the direction we are headed. The Truman administration first proposed health care for all Americans in 1948, but it remains out of reach as 43 million Americans go without basic health care. Why?

In early 1977, President Carter delivered a fireside chat that proposed a plan for energy independence through conservation and renewable energy. But today, we have an energy policy that includes destroying the Alaskan wilderness and waging war in the Middle East. Why?

Now we know. For the past several decades, powerful corporate interests have blocked those programs that the American people clearly want. In a Wall Street Journal poll last fall, 75% of Americans supported universal health insurance. Polling by the Civil Society Institute last year showed 88% of Americans favor raising the national fuel standard to 40 miles per gallon.

But that doesn't square with the bottom line for the corporate interests. So over the past seven years, pharmaceutical companies have spent nearly $800 million to influence votes in Congress. Energy industry lobbyists spent $160 billion in 2004 alone; that's nearly $300 million for each member of the House and Senate.

It's time for a change.

8. I've had a good batting average with them...
They publish you no more than once in every ninety day period. I've had three letters printed by them since I moved here.
