1. I-94 is a mess between Madison and Milwaukee

A big section of it is still closed, and may be that way for a while.

Here are some of the DOT closings:

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?hl=en&ie=UTF8&oe=UTF8&msa=0&msid=106714907945366530639.00044f3ec972fee85471d&ll=43.189158,-89.500122&spn=1.874356,3.383789&z=8

One way I have taken before is getting off on SR 16 near Waukesha and following it to SR 33 in Portage, to 90/94. Only problem is, some of 16 is closed. Play around with the map at the link above. Those are pretty reliable state highways, that is, if you can find one that's not underwater. Hopefully the DOT closings will point the way.

Another way would be US 41 to Fond Du Lac, then west on SR 26, as you can see on the map. You'd have to follow a few roads to get to Mauston (SR 23, 82). Doesn't appear to be any issues there, and you'd avoid many of the flood zones.

Or just take US 41 to Oshkosh, then SR 21 west to I-94. That might be easier.

Here are some suggestions on the JS website:

Hope this helps.

(EDIT: I originally gave the instructions backward)

3. thanks for the links
We're trying to move Daughter #2 to join Daughter #1 in Minneapolis. I'm beginning to think we may need to postpone for a week. :hi:

10. construction fun on 33
that is one of the problems with this mess.
Hwy 33 just is not available due to construction. would have been a great back up.
I would try to avoid portage atleast till they get the hwy 39, 94 detours worked out.
Everything was ending up in downtown portage--quite the mess. Huge backups

2. My daughter drove from Minneapolis to Milwaukee last weekend.
She ended up taking 41N to Appleton, then 10W to Stevens Point, 51N to Wausau, 29W to I94 to get back home. We had suggested that she just take I43N to Green Bay and then 29W to I94. I would say either route would work. We thought our suggestion was easier, but her route seemed to work fine, although she did miss an exit in Appleton. Good luck...either way, prepare for a longer trip.

5. Not as often as we'd like!
She actually thought about postponing her trip too. She was in Milwaukee visiting our other daughter. Normally, her trip "home" takes her to northeast Wisconsin. That's why we suggested the more-familiar route through Green Bay. But, she insisted on "blazing her own trail."

6. You should have no problem taking 94 by Thursday
Edited on Tue Jun-17-08 03:18 PM by CatholicEdHead
They are adding a extra lane bypass above the water around Lake Mills and Johnson Creek. I-94 is also open in the Portage to Mauston stretch, you just have issues on ramps getting to and from I-39 which you will not need to take anyways around Portage.

7. I saw that about the bypass lanes after I posted.
I think it's just going to take a *little* longer than usual. Then again, I went upstairs to look for a missing towel---and there's no way she will have packed up by then. It's kinda scary, I really just should never go upstairs.

9. suggest 21 from oskosh to tomah
take 41 to oshkosh and then 21 west all the way to tomah
mostly 2 lanes but should be fairly clear with less congestion.
I would try to avoid the i system south of mauston for a bit yet.
Way to much chance of big backups

good luck
