Outrage as Kerry Bashing Vietnam Vets talk to school
Got this today... anyone else who is outraged should make the time to make the proper contacts. We can't subject our kids to this.
Rp

"Yesterday (Friday 10/15) Einstein Middle School in Appleton cancelled regular classes so that hundreds of students could attend a presentation by some Viet Nam Veterans. These veterans discussed their experiences in the War, then proceeded to harrangue against John Kerry. They equated him with Jane Fonda, called him a "Traitor"; advocated for bringing him up on legal charges of treason; a vote for Kerry is a vote for a Traitor; and so forth. (One of the vets made my son very uncomfortable with glares and sneers, apparently because he was wearing his Kerry-Edwards button.) The principal sat through this presentation and did nothing to stop the Kerry bashing or to redirect the speakers away from their political harrangues. A number of the kids at Einstein who support Kerry were villified by other students for supporting a "traitor" after this presentation.
These vets may be scheduled to speak at other schools in the area.
I have called the principal of Einstein to register my complaint that a public school would sponsor and give apparent approval to venomous anti-Kerry, Bush-campaigning speakers. He does acknowledge that this diatribe by the veterans did occur, and that he was there in the audience.
I hope that some of you, who are also outraged, might find a few minutes to make a similar call or fax to the principal of Einstein, school board members or to the AASD school superintendent. I think that Einstein Middle School needs to set the record straight with students--they have been left with the impression that our public school system, the Einstein principal and the teachers there regard Kerry as a traitor to his country and Bush as the Presidential candidate of choice.
I also think that the Appleton public school system should ensure that these or similar speakers do not continue to present their one-sided message to public school students in the area.
Einstein Middle School Principal:

Thanks for your time in reading this...

3. Do you have any links for this?
My daughter did her undergrad work at Lawrence, and has many friends in the community and the university.

If I could send her a link, she could mobilize some people to complain.

13. This came from a direct e-mail
from Rebecca Laird who is in the FoxValleyforKerry Yahoo group with me. So it's not something that has made the media rounds, yet. Plus the media up here is run by Gannett and both the Appleton and Oshkosh papers tend to run very much pro-Republican. Go to http://www.thenorthwestern.com and read how they practically orgasm over Bush's visit. *Sigh*

Anyways, yeah if you want to contact the author of the post, check out that Yahoo group and contact her through there (not sure if I can post her e-mail on DU).

8. Since when can middle school kids vote?
What was even the point of the presentation? The only possible effect it even could have had was to piss off parents.

11. WIll Do - I Am A Teacher In Wisconsin
Just read this Sat. night, so I will call on Monday, DEFINITELY!
You should contact the Kerry campaogn and see if Kerry himseld couldcome there and talk to the students. Hey, how about a call to the Wisconsi chapter of the ACLU? I am dealing with a teacher in my school who makjes her kids pray, tells them why she votes repiglican, and why they need to tell this to their parents, etc. The ACLU has been a great help, and yes, things are happening!

12. Where are you in WI?
I just moved to the state from WA. I got a lake cabin near Cumberland and love being a cheesehead.

I am trying to get ideas and feedback for pro-Kerry activism in the last few days before the election.

Here's my post asking for feedback:

14. I'm in Oshkosh myself
The Fox Valley area is probably the place that will decide the electoral vote of the state. Milwaukee and Madison will go Dem, Green Bay tends to go Republican along with Rural areas...

Appleton votes Republican more often than not and Oshkosh votes Democratic (no matter what the right wing paper tries to do to stop it) more often than not.

Thus why Bush and Kerry targeted the areas on Friday.

15. Bowler
Nice school. We were designated a "Wisconsin School of Promise," due to our performance on state tests. We are one of the poorest districts in the state. DPI will come here this year to talk to us about how this was accomplished. All I do is make the kids relaxed and comfortable, and I teach my all every day of the year, no "teaching to the test" for me.
I have a thread on Democrats.Com (2004 Prez Board) on just exactly what I am doing this election for a teaching unit. Check it out if you want.

16. i sent the >>original message to a couple of friends in
wisconsin and asked that they take some action. one is a member here and is a political animal like most of us and got a bunch of her people mobilised but they were waiting to take action because there was nothing in the news about this.

the other person i forwarded this too is just a mother but she got pissed and i got this email from her this morning:

I called the school, talked to the principal, he said the comments did
happen and that it was inappropriate and they were going to mention it in
class today. Letters will be sent home and all that stuff.

now that seems like a pretty chicken shit response to me. but i also think that before the huge stink that can and should be raised about this can be raised, is this rebecca laird person willing to fight and what effect is it going to have on her kid?

17. Well, at least they admitted it was inappropriate.
I still would like for the school to invite Jim Rassmann or another of Kerry's band of brothers to speak for the sake of equal time. Rassmann has been in the state already and might be willing to appear.

18. Poor kids
They can't even vote! What was the point!

Thank goodness there are veterans who support Kerry. But then it seems sometimes that they are treated as if THEY weren't real veterans somehow. Bastards.
