Area veterans slam McCain on voting record

A group of area veterans threw jabs at Sen. John McCain on Friday for launching “false and misleading attacks” on Sen. Barack Obama.

Speakers at the La Crosse County Democratic headquarters in downtown La Crosse were quick to honor the Republican Arizona senator’s military service but sharply criticized his voting record on their behalf.

“Sen. McCain is a politician who on one hand throws veterans a few crumbs while the other hand takes away a loaf of bread,” said Bill Andersen, a 25-year Army veteran from Onalaska, Wis. “When Sen. McCain had a chance to stand up for veterans, he turned his back on us.”

Former state Sen. Rod Moen of Whitehall, Wis., described himself as a former McCain supporter. But as a Vietnam veteran, he said, he couldn’t support someone who expressed a willingness to stay in the Middle East another 100 years.

“(Obama) has a plan for responsibly ending the war in Iraq and refocusing the fight in Afghanistan to keep America safe,” Moen said. “He’s committed to changing our foreign policy so we can restore our security and standing and strengthen our alliance with other nations so we, together, can win the global war on terror.”

Moen also said he doesn’t agree McCain has strong support among veterans.

“Any veteran who votes for Sen. McCain would be like a chicken voting for Colonel Sanders,” Andersen said.
