So......Donald Drivers Dad....
Any idea what instigated the beating? Pure and simple hate crime? A Cowboy vs Packer issue?

1. Mr. Driver was stopped for outstanding traffic warrants
He knew -- and was known by -- the cops who stopped him.

The cops detained and arrested him for the traffic tickets.

On the way to the station, they {allegedly, according to Mr. Driver's written statement)
stopped behind some building to assault him. The assault that hospitalized him included
shoving something (a nightstick?) down his throat, so he's currently unable to speak and
can only articulate words with the help of pen and paper.

I did see a fragment of a TV interview with someone from Houston, who said those
particular cops were known to have a notoriously poor reputation in the black community.

That's all anybody knows right now, except the cops haven't been suspended or assigned
different duties, as far as I know. The police weren't interviewed by reporters and there
were no statements from the Houston police quoted in any of the reports I saw.

4. Geez, you must be psychic.
the original description:

"...fat, ignorant, racist, worthless, pig fucking, ...asshole fans..." is so blandly nondescript -- it could be almost any Packer forum -- I don't even have a clue what blog you might be referring to.

Just kidding....

I've actually been pretty pleasantly surprised -- most every sports blog I've ever gone to -- has at least a 50/50 balance of healthy attitudes/pig fuckers. Is there some peculiar peckerwood niche-blog (Bedsheets 'N Sabres, or something, serving Shawano Hollow) that surpasses them all?

Last I heard, Mr. Driver was doing a lot better.

6. Mojo - What is with Shawano?
My son went years ago with a friend who has a family home there. I was new to WI and heard he might encounter some problems (we're black) so I invested in our first family cell phone plan just in case. His visit went without incident.

Years later, both my sons visited. My younger son lost his wallet and some 11 mos. later received a letter from the Shawano PD saying that if he did not claim it, it would be considered abandoned. (It was his first notification). The wallet had been in the possession of the police since the day he lost it and they returned it via certified mail. We were happily surprised the contents were intact including about $50.

Is Shawano considered a peckerwood niche (your words) :)? Any others in this great state in which you might suggest we proceed with caution?

7. Yes, and no.
I had a friend who paid off part of his medical school loans by serving at the clinic in Kashena, just outside Shawano.

So I got a pretty negative point of view when I visited -- but that was way back in the 80's.

A long time, ago, too I went out a few times with a half Native American woman (the other half was mostly African American.) She told me about the craziness and anger and hatred around annual "spearfishing" protests. But that was in the 90's.

I don't want to say any more than that. There are some nice folks in Shawano, too, I'm sure...

5. No one saw anything.
"Did you see anything," the cops at every police station in Houston asked?

"Nah, I didn't see anything," they all replied.

It was a one page report.

http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5hZcR_XzHtjTlAz220ld95zN9C0YwD95DCORO0

HOUSTON (AP) — Houston police said Tuesday there is no evidence to back claims that three police officers brutally assaulted the father of Green Bay Packers wide receiver Donald Driver during a traffic stop last month.

In a one-page statement, the Houston Police Department said an internal investigation concluded they "could not prove or disprove" allegations that Marvin Driver Jr., 56, was severely beaten and injured before being taken to jail Nov. 17 for outstanding traffic warrants. Police said the claims have been ruled as "not sustained."

Shortly after being taken to jail, Marvin Driver was hospitalized and listed in critical condition. His family had said he was taken to a gas station by police, beaten by at least two officers and had something forced down his throat.

Houston police said its investigation, which included medical records and eyewitness accounts, didn't substantiate the allegations of brutality.

"Medical information obtained by investigators does not support or indicate any injuries to Mr. Driver consistent with a recent assault," the statement read.

Attempts to reach Driver's family by telephone were not successful Tuesday. Houston police would not make any comment beyond the statement.

Two months ago, the news reports said otherwise:

...As they beat him and forced him to swallow something, Officers Gilberto Cruz, Matthew Marin and Bacilio Guzman told Marvin Driver Jr. he was "going to see Jesus," according to relatives and community activist Quanell Evans, who identified himself as Quanell X.

"Mr. Marvin Driver Jr. is now at Hermann Hospital in ICU where he can't even speak," relatives said in a statement. "Doctors say there is some bleeding on his brain from blunt force trauma."
