Who here is from Green Bay area? |
|
I'm from Green Bay (stationed in southwest Illinois, at present), and I'm wondering what's being done on the local level in red Brown County to build a larger Democratic base. Making northeast Wisconsin a blue or at least purple region in the county would solidify the Democrats' hold on Wisconsin politics. Making Wisconsin a solid blue state would potentially shift national politics by making it a "safe" state for Democrats, thus allowing Democratic Presidential candidates to focus on other states.
Just a thought. Are the Brown County Dems doing anything to build up their base by picking up seats on school boards, city councils, and the county board?

1. Green Bay and the demo party |
|
Hi! I am from Green Bay and belong to the democratic party. I am extremely upset over the election and get frustrated when my party meets and we spend our time with parlimentary procedure and don't have the time to vent our feelings about the stolen election! It was discussed the need to get people to run for school board and other ways into the political scene....also it was mentioned that Carl R. was smarter than we were because he knew how to frame issues. I didn't agree and said the election was stolen and in my mind until something is done about the integrity of the machines ,no matter what we do about the message or messenger,we will not win. We do not have a office here in GB or a phone. We meet at the Aging Center on Adams St. We do have a newsletter and a P.O. box. You have phone numbers for the officers in the newsletter. On Sun. I attended a Moveon.org meeting and was impressed how organized it was and finally was able to talk about the impt. issues and meet others who felt the same way. while there the young man sitting next to me talked about how he was approached at a Kerry rally by a man who offered to give 70 0r 80 thousand to set up an office for Kerry here in GB. I think he said he was from Democracy In Action. What happend I don't know because the office was down on Dousman St. and it looked like an air raid shelter. We had to bring in desks, chairs, and they asked for food for the volunteers and bottled water and etc.....I don't feel the state party supports GB. This is what I see after the 2000 election. Peace, sheila PS. As I write this,no wonder young people don't join...we meet at the Aging Center.....there were students there from the UWGB to report on the voter turn out and it was very good!

I've perhaps lost touch with some of the local politicos... I've written to Lou O'Malley enough that he knows who I am, and I worked with Rabbi Sid at the local Wes Clark campaign HQ. Those are the two "wise men" Democrats of the GB area, near as I can tell. In any case, I have a lot of respect for both of them.
Aging Center? Come on, couldn't they at least have them at the library? They have a whole auditorium in the basement that could be used.
E-mail me back....

2. Fairly new to Green Bay area |
|
but very interested in being more involved in the local political scene, and maybe even a run at office in some capacity.
I was over to the local Brown County Dem office on Dousman, and I agree it wasn't very inspiring. That does not take away one single bit the enthusiasm of the people working there, they were wonderful and deserve a lot of thanks from us Kerry supporters for their efforts.
I'm a (middle aged) Veteran and am interested in participating in some of the local Dem meetings and would be curious to learn where I can find more information about running for office in the area. In recent weeks I've been reading a lot about the teaching of Intelligent Design vs Evolution, and after have now done enough research on the subject to come to the conclusion I want ID kept out of my children's public schools as part of any "science" curriculum. (My short opinion, if people are interested in challenging prevailing scientific theories, then by all means we should continue by challenging gravity, relativity, astronomy, etc.)
I know that's a wedge issue in a way, but I'm becoming passionate about it, isn't that a start?

5. Heh, you're in for a scrap with the ID thing.... |
|
...but it's a good fight to take. Some years back, Roy Moore's Fine Band of Lunatics (a.k.a., the Christian Family Association) came up to Brown County trying to push us to post the Ten Commandments in the BC Courthouse. It was a big to-do, but they eventually lost after some hard fighting by Rabbi Sid and other loyal Dems. I wrote a few letters to the editor speaking out against it.
The religious wedge stuff lights up the local political scene like few other issues. Be prepared to take a few lumps, but in the end, if you fight hard, you'll come out on top. But this stuff is the reason we need good Democrats on the school board. Thinking about running? Go for it!

9. I live disproving wingnut theories... |
|
and this seems like a "shooting fish in a barrel" issue, although I suspect there are a large number of dumb fish roaming these waters.
Roy Moore is a nut job of the first order. When I hear the phrase "activist judge" he is the FIRST person that comes to mind.
I know how the wedge stuff riles people up, I'm one of those fancy pants liberal elites, and fortunately, it riles me up too! It will be interesting to see who wins this one, science or religion.
Amazingly, I'm Catholic and believe in a higher power, but I also have a background in science that makes the theory of evolution and the scientific method (observation, hypothesis, prediction, testing) that produced it difficult to dispute. The ID folks use negative logic to arrive at dubious conclusions. Saying "you can't prove God didn't do it" somehow leads them to the possibility that maybe He did. You can't prove the Easter Bunny doesn't exist either, but chances are...
At best this discussion *perhaps* has a place in public school in a philosophy course that explores all the alternatives, but not in a science class. (Oh to be young again in a high school forensics debate on the topic!) We're getting blown away in math and science in the US and some believe the gap can be bridged by introducing confusing curricula challenging science that's long been established as sound. No wonder we're behind!
My oldest son will be entering kindergarten next year and we're already cultivating his critical thinking skills. You haven't lived until your four year old asks you "Why" and you ask him "Why do you think?" then watch him formulate an answer. IMHO, that's the greatest gift a parent can give a child.
Thanks for the encouragement!

16. No specific recollection of that.... |

...but I wouldn't doubt it. It's also entirely possible that there was more than one such case where right-wingers wanted to post the TEN COMMANDMENTSTM in the courthouse.

Was very fortunate to serve during peacetime, been out for 20+ years.
I've never worn my military service on my sleeve until this election and puffed out my chest any time I had a conversation with a hawk who never served or wanted to talk Swift Boat BS about JK. These are the people who's sons and daughters I want drafted first when the time comes, and it's coming.
I am very much against the war in Iraq, and hope that my brothers and sisters serving today make it back to this country and it's not too f'd up that they suffer like many of the VV's did when they returned.
My wife and I are transplanted Milwaukeean's in Green Bay also.

Long time lurker, first time poster.
I'm from GB as well- I'm co-chair of the UWGB College Dems, actually. I agree with your assessment of the office- it's a little known fact that GB had more national staff camped out there than most places in the country. They even sent us students the national student coordinator to push us harder. I certainly enjoyed the office more than the stale Republican counterpart, where they have offices in an upscale building, each with their own (modern) laptop, sitting on comfortable furnature...
Running for office, you'd want to get in touch with their Candidate recruitment committee I think... Jack Krueger I believe is one of the key players with that area, if not outright heading up the committee.
If you get into the local scene, you'll probably meet me eventually. I'm not a large player in local politics, but we College Dems do have a bit of influence that we've managed to leverage well in the past, and have a few advocates for our interests within the party, on the admin council, etc.
I hope you do well with whatever it is you decide to do.
