STATE STREET PROTESTS: MADISON
Join the PRESENCE for DEMOCRACY and PEACE!

Each Saturday, December 4th, 11th, and 18th, 1:00-4:00pm
Lisa Link Park, 400 block of State Street, Madison

The Madison Area Peace Coalition, in cooperation with a range of
other organizations, is calling for a visible and vocal presence on a busy State Street during the Holiday season.

While the war continues in Iraq and the threat of further US
"interventions" looming on the horizon across the Middle East, Latin
America and elsewhere, the recent election has raised serious
questions about the nature of our democracy here at home.

The war abroad and threats to our democratic rights and guarantees
are inextricably tied together. Ready to pay any price to maintain power and continue its reign, the Bush crowd utilized every means at their disposal to assure a second White House term for the Neocons and the "religious" Right. In order to pursue their aggressive military
agenda overseas, while exacting payment for it in mountains of debt and additional lives destroyed, these war hawks will attempt to further repression and the curtailment of civil liberties domestically.

The war in Iraq clearly has nothing to do with democracy and freedom.
You do not free people and bring them democracy by killing them,
imprisoning them, torturing them, instituting martial law, by destroying their cities, expropriating their resources, privatizing their economy, and creating a puppet government. The upcoming election in Iraq, little more than a U.S public relations campaign created to give some legitimacy to the occupation, will not resolve anything. The war will go on.

Some argue that the recent election here in this country, viewed by
many as fraudulent, another theft, had little to do with democracy either.
What's clear is that the anti-democratic trend in this country will
also continue. The ruling elite currently at the helm will not hesitate in diminishing democratic space and guarantees here at home in order to pursue their quest for control of oil and global dominance. That Bush and company clearly threaten social justice, the physical environment, and democracy, few in the peace camp would dispute.

Now is the time to pull together. It's vitally important that we take
and hold shared democratic space wherever we can; that our movements
provide the "commons" where voices of resistance can be heard. Join
us in raising a collective voice of dissent. Come together to exercise
the freedoms to assemble and speak out.

With so much going on – holiday fairs and other gatherings - during
this busy season, we're asking that people take some time and stop by on a
given Saturday.

For Democracy and Peace, Join us at Lisa Link Park!!

Schedule:

December 4th: Open Mic. "Speak Out Against the War" – its illegality
and
mounting cost in lives and squandered resources. Bring signs and
banners, handouts and other materials to pass out to the State Street
shoppers. End the Occupations – Iraq, Afghanistan, and Palestine.
Support the Troops – Bring Them Home, Now!

December 11th: Open Mic "Speak Out for Democracy, Fair Elections and
Support of Civil Liberties". Groups and individuals are invited to
raise their voice, bring signs and display boards, props, leaflets and
petitions geared to the holiday crowd. An opportunity to spread the
word on various campaigns in defense of democracy, constitutional
guarantees and demands for fair and transparent elections.

December 18th: An alternative Holiday Presence. Bring puppets and
musical instruments. Perform street theater. A sing-along with anti-
war carols. A coming together of opposition voices, all those for peace and democracy. Bring handouts with re-written carols, and flyers
reminding shoppers about the origins of the Holiday Season and where it all began.

From local No Stolen Elections mailing list (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SCWINov3/) Local group is meeting ev Sat. 4 pm at Wilmar Center on Jenifer St.

Subject: TUESDAY, NOV 30 NOON PROTEST

Election Protection follow-up. This week's Isthmus contains much (appalling) information Wisconsin's unfolding voter registration
mess:

http://www.thedailypage.com/features/docfeed/docs/
document.php?intdocid=104.

It's the Elections Board that signed the contract; Accenture is
the company (of Florida felons' list fame!) that they contracted
with; and a protest is scheduled for noon on Tuesday, Nov. 30 at the Elections Board office (17 West Main Street, Suite 310.)

2. Glad to see you post this
Got the following e-mail myself and wished I could go.

A rally protesting the privatization of Wisconsin's voter registration system is scheduled for Tuesday, November 30 at noon outside the State Elections Board office on the Capitol Square. The Elections Board is housed in the Risser Justice Building at 17 West Main Street.

The state has entered into a multi-million contract with Accenture, a global management consulting and outsourcing firm, to help create Wisconsin's first statewide list of registered voters. The system to be developed under the contract also would be used in making the final tabulation of votes on election day.

To say Accenture's past is checkered is a vast understatement. The firm was involved in the notorious purge of supposed felons and dead people from Florida voting lists before the 2000 elections. Accenture was known as Andersen Consulting before the Arthur Andersen division's association with the Enron accounting scandal forced a name change.

Accenture's parent company is headquartered in Bermuda to avoid paying taxes in the United States. The company recently came under investigation by the Securities and Exchange Commission for a possible violation of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, the federal law banning bribery of foreign officials.

To call for the cancellation of the Accenture contract, you can contact the state Elections Board by e-mail at seb@seb.state.wi.us or by calling 608-266-8005.
